2007 Jefferson Extra number Incuse of Edge

I've been told that raised letters on the edge are from coins bumping each other. I have found a Incuse 0 on the edge lettering that is not in line with the other letters - numbers. Is this still damage from a coin bumping it and leaving a depression, or something different? Thx

Hey, Tuck! From the title of your thread, I was expecting to see a Jefferson nickel rather than a Prez dollar. LOL! Edge lettering on a nickel? Yeah, right!

Anyway, can you post a photo which shows the edge "head-on" rather than at an angle? It's hard for me to see any detail even after enlarging it.

Thanks Chris. Here is the only other picture I took. I hope it is better. I took the first one from the severe angle so people would see that it is truely sunken in. Thanks again!

 

Looks like dropped letters. These occur when dies fill up with metal shavings and grease, then "drop" off the die and can get impressed into coins. These Presidential dollars are fairly notorious for them.

I didn't say they weren't worth anything, though. The most I know about them was a couple of writeups about them in NN.

Is the "0" perfectly circular? It seems that way from the first pic, but in the second pic it looks like part of it is thicker and not completely smoothly round.

Dmitry, you don't think it could be from gOd or One just as easy as the date? I read that any part of the obverse or reverse die can get filled with an amalgam of grease and metal shavings, and fall off. These coins are more subject to show this since they have a unique collar, and reeding would obliterate this, but these coins aren't reeded.

I know, but I'm confused as to if it's a perfect 0 or if it's slightly mis-shaped. I guess it doesn't make a difference for a dropped filling, since it can have some extra material to make the dropped details imperfect.

Well, going by what I know of error coin in general I would have been doubtful. Personally I don't know much about the prez dollar series and the specifics of how they are struck. So, I'm inclined to believe what has been said by those who know more about it.
It's a learning experience. =)

 

Contact mark IMO. Probably from the date. I have seen several like this posted on here with various letters and numbers.

How does one tell the difference? I would be curious if there is a way to know, since both would appear similar I assume.

I'm guessing there would be differences under magnification. The contact mark should be more "sloppy" since it would have been done under much lower pressure than a dropped letter being struck in a die. The few verified examples of dropped letters I've seen look really crisp and sharp. That's why I was asking if it's perfectly round or imperfect.
