its an attractive coin. (although the image to be honest is rather ummm homely) The eagle on the back is what sells me on the coin. Sure is nice...

I say it's because of the silver content, investment potential, and history.

Because they are so heavily marketed.;)

It also doesn't hurt that so many survived in uncirculated condition thanks to very few people using them back in the day.

As well as many of them sitting in Treasury vaults for so long. In the 1950's and 1960's when interest got high in coin collecting, people started getting these from the Mint... a lot of coins previously thought to be rare suddenly showed up in mint or near mint condition! This is why you'll notice the value of Morgans doesn't show much connection to their initial mintage, lol.

As to their popularity and how heavily marketed they are... if you want an old coin with an iteresting design and in good condition, for a reasonable price, can't really beat a silver dollar that was minted in huge quantities where many of them weren't circulated much (or again in the case of the ones stting in the vaults for decades, at all!)

One reason I'd say is because of it's attractive & gorgous design.

The artistic workmanship is excellent and the engraving and detailing (unlike in the case of the Peace Dollars, for example) is deep and doesn't easily wear. And thus even the examples from circulation often times look pretty darn good.

I've always steered away from Morgans even when offered a complete set valued at 40,000 by the owner. I think people buy them, keep them for as long as they can, and then try to get their money back at some point. I, on the other hand, like to think that I just cut out the middle part. Too much hype and dishonesty surrounding the collecting of Morgans takes all the fun out of collecting them. I can get fixated with coins that are more fun to collect and just as nice to look at without the entire culture collecting Morgans seems to encompass. But I guess one addiction is as good as another. Right!?

Right, I'm sure, on the addiction thingy, whatever suits you. But then not every silver crown is so artistically superb and well engraved it can attain the distinction year after year of being one of the most popular and respected silver crowns in the world (i.e., as the Morgan has).

because they are the silver keystone of coin collecting. They are attractive (to most), are silver, are readily available in most dates/mintmarks, are old, and most of all are affordable for even beginning collectors. You can't help but gravitate to them.

That's a very interesting observation. I have a number of Morgans, mostly circulated, that I obtained at what I consider bargain prices, but have never tried to put a set together for reasons close to yours. I like the size, the weight, the silver, the history, and the design. The people I run into dealing in them make me nervous, the pricing frequently baffles me, and for reasons I don't understand they seem to be harder to resell than other coins.

...or it could just be my paranoia kicking in.

For me...the size! You have "lots" to look at and what you are looking at is beautiful. Also, when you hold it, you feel you have something of worth. Flip that coin in the air and the sound it creates is magical.

So whether that coin was used in a poker game out in the 'ole West to a gift given by some grandparent to their grandchild, these coins all seem to have a story to tell.

I'm unsure as to why they're so addicting, but not really to me. I like all silver dollars in general! :D

For some reason, I think peace dollars are more appealing, but it's only an opinion!

Silver dollars appeal to me because of their size.

As for Morgans specifically, I don't find it a particularly beautiful design, but it's design is so bold !

Very dramatic, especially the way the head is so large as to fill up the obverse. It's like, "I'm a big dollar ! Every other coin in your pocket aspires to be me ! Every other silver dollar has arty pretensions. Put me in a slot machine ! Slam me down on the bar when you order a whiskey! I'm as wild as the old west and represent a time when Americans were rugged individualists. Save your SBAs for the PBS and Sierra Club comrades." I picture a train rolling through 19th century Colorado.

However, I don't collect Morgans. I thought about it, but decided I was too late in the pyramid.

For all the reasons people seem to like Morgans, I'd think that they would like American Silver Eagles better. Larger, nice design, silver but less of a history I guess. I just like them better.

The size, history and fine details of the Morgan $ are appealing to me. These are very enjoyable (addicting?) coins to collect. Also of course there is the silver content and value. I also have Peace $s, but its detail of the Liberty head is blurry compared to the Morgan and just doesn't have the sense of history.
