What is the deal with V-Nickels.

Looked all over the internet to find a V-Nickel in VF-20 condition.

    2012 Red Book shows $12.

However they sell for $25 or more on eBay. Ridiculous!

I belong to a metal detecting site, and somebody has one for sale. The one on the right is $10.
But, there is a nick in the rim, as you can see.

Would this hurt the value much?

Can't see the picture and I won't join that forum. Red book is not a good indicator of the prices for coins. Yes the rim nick will lower the price - how much depends on how bad. For the liberty nickel it depends on the date you are looking at - I can find them in the VF range from VTCoins.com for $11 to $15(I did not look at shipping costs).

Here, I'll try it again to see if this forum can see it.

Well - what about the reverse? The obverse tic and lightly cleaned would not bother me. I am assuming this is without cents 1883. This price is in line with VT coins.

That rim nick wouldn't bother me much. Without seeing the reverse, it appears to be a nice grade. I would spend $10 on it in a heart beat.

I have found redbook to be very accurate.

By the way, taking the nick out of the question, what do you think it grades?
