The former mayor of our small town asked me if I would find out what grade this coin might fall in and what it's value may be. It's one of the nicer Morgans I have ever seen personally. Thanks guys !!

I don't have a grade ,but I do agree with what you said,it is a very nice looking coin.

The 80-S is typically well-struck, so I'm a little concerned about the lack of detail in the hair above her ear. Also, since it is obviously not a scan, there doesn't appear to be too much luster. Ordinarily, I would think it might be MS65, but with that in mind it could be anywhere between AU58 & MS63. I'll let someone with better eyes chime in.

Even if it would grade 65, value is about $150. Personally, for that date and mint I'd call it a 64. Value of a 64 is about half that. Luster is expected to be somewhat subdued because that is what they call a frosty Morgan.

Thanks ... and yes, frosty is a good description because the pictures really don't do it any justice. I offered him $50 on the spot without even knowing what it was worth. But I knew at the very least that it was worth that much. He's not interested in selling it anyways. (of course :() ..

From those images, I would have to wonder whether it might go Prooflike, but there may be no way to tell without seeing the coin in hand.

I'd be less than surprised if the coin went MS65, but then the 1880-S probably comes nicer than any other date in the series. (There are more nice 1881-S coins, but only because there are more 1881-S coins.)

I was just looking at the picture and thinking the same thing before I even read your post Stewart. I'd bet it's PL. I'd think it has a chance of a 65.
