Just wondering if anyone here actualy receives gifts from family or friends that are coins or coin related. Have they embraced your coin collecting "problem"? I get nothing. I actually think that's a good thing though. Who knows what Chinese replica my friends and family would purchase, thinking they bought me the greatest thing ever. Or even worse... "Oh thanks for the "unsearched" roll of wheaties with a Indian head showing on both ends!". Of course I would never let them know I didn't love it. -greg
I get reference books and coins. Generally rolls to search. Instead of a gift card, I might get a box or several rolls to look through. I guess because I have found some coins of value, my family supports my hobby. Or maybe they just want to keep me quiet ? gary
A long time ago when I was about ten, my dad bought me some supplies and some nice MS 1950's quarters. Last year my wife bought me a couple silver eagles. That was about the extent of it. This year I'm getting an upgrade to my current metal detector. Now that's exciting!
Before coins I was on the road all the time. Now that I'm into coins, I can spend a lot more time with them. Despite being on the internet all the time. My wife bought me a loupe with a light, but it was a 60x-100x!!
My in-laws gave me a $25 box of cents last year. I like to roll search in my spare time so it was the perfect gift plus I can returns the ones I do not want for cash.
I find myself giving the coin or coin related gift, instead of receiving them! That said, I did receive a metal detector for my birthday Ha Ha! Someone was LISTENING! Now all they have to do is go out and bury something for me to FIND! Now, I think that would be a GREAT idea! Lucy
Only my dad would give me coins as gifts and I'd do the same back, since we were the only collectors who knew what the other liked in the family. Unfortunately, he's gone so well, I'm on my own. Once my kids are a little older, I'll know which one gets the coins to pass on. Hopefully the son but currently, my 3 year old daughter is showing the most interest.. she likes them cause their "shiny" and "pretty".. My guess for the boy is, they're not dinosaurs so he's not that interested. I thought about getting him one of those I think they're Canadian T-Rex silver coins but I'd want him to have something he can hold, etc. That's just too costly to give a 6 year old right now that'd want to play with it.
I like to buy them for myself and say they're Christmas gifts for myself to justify spending more then i usually do hahaha
I have but I actively discourage it. Its just too hard. The only time I ever ask for something is if I give them the exact link to what I want. I know its lame, but its simply too hard for others to know what I would like, and any time they have tried I never liked the gift. My advice is if someone suggests something coin related to be VERY SPECIFIC in yoru request. You would be surprised what kind of colorized, HSN dreck people think as "collectible coins". Their heart is in the right place, and I love them for trying, but its just too hard, (especially for me collecting the oddball stuff I am in to).
Oh yeah. I usually get something or another every year. Sometimes a few things. It's basically all I ask for if I'm pressed. I'd rather let them know what I want than get some new contraption to set up that takes up space and doesn't get used, but costs the same. I only ask for modern stuff. Like I've gotten Kookaburras, sliver mint sets. One time I got a NGC PF-70 2009 Lincoln Commemorative. With the graded or encapsulated modern mint stuff, there's not much concern with counterfeiting. I wouldn't ask for any older stuff for my sets. I'd be too picky anyway. My family's big into gifting every year. Christmas day can be very busy. Too busy IMO.
Last year for Christmas my parents got me 2 Morgans from a new shop in the mall. They paid $30 apiece for whizzed, pitted morgans While I appreciated the gifts very much, I felt obligated to explain to them the dangers of buying coins... silver was only $17.50 at the time and they were only worth melt. Consolation was, they listened and took it in for what it was, instead of thinking I was complaining about the gifts as I feared they might.
Oh you didn't know? Your getting a 1 oz Ptolemy VI Gold Mnaieion K type with a disguised Cleopatra II in your stocking =[].
I get some from my family but I have to be specific about what I want and they usually go to my coin dealer so they do not have to worry about fakes or getting taken. However, my wife told me point blank that she was NOT buying me coin for the Holidays :-(
my family will send me money and designate that it is for me to go buy a coin. my fiancée, however, will get my online wishlist and buy a coin from that list.
This year I specifically asked for Danscos, ASEs, proof sets, etc. I know I'm getting at one of the proof sets I asked for from my MIL, because she already cooed to my wife that she was impressed with the presentation packaging of US Mint sourced sets. And to be direct - I would never turn down an ASE whether original or a problem. If it is genuine, it's still 1 oz of silver.
Lol good one. Even then, I would prefer a high end portrait Julius Caesar or a gold Kyrenacai with a silphium reverse. See how hard it is? Even such a great gift, still would never quite jibe with a colelctors interests.
