I've noticed these three series of notes, becoming more scarce in circulation.

However, I've also noticed that whenever I think to myself that I haven't seen one of these particular series in a while, all of a sudden, I start finding a ton of them, then they peter out, again.

Case in point, the other day, I realized I hadn't seen any series '01 notes in quite a while. Then, the next day while at the bank, I received a series '01 $10 while withdrawing my cash for the week, and 3 or 4 series '01 $1's, while doing a strap search.
Not earth shattering finds, or anything, but I just find it interesting.

Since it's been roughly a decade (give or take a few years) since these series were current, when do you guys think folks will start saving them, based on series date alone?

Oh, and btw, I contemplated saving that series '01 $10 I got (Richmond note, serial CE 88650065 A) because of it's nice condition (most '01's I find are pretty ragged) but I probably won't. :D

As collector items they should be saved in fresh straps never circulated. So they've been getting put away for some time already, especially all the blocks and fancy or low SNs that collectors love.

The reason you see fewer and fewer is that the low denomination notes are the work horses of our currency and simply wear out or are removed and destroyed as they are damaged, worn, etc. Just like you mentioned finding ragged notes. The opposite is true of high denomination notes. $50s and $100s have much longer life spans in circulation because they are not used as frequently as the smaller denominations, even if the lower denominations vastly outnumber the higher denominations' printages.

That is a very good point, Krispy, and thank you for your thoughts.

I very rarely have $100's, but I have $50's fairly frequently, and I definitely come across older $50's more so, than lower denoms. I guess that's why finding that '01 $10 the other day, that was in such nice shape, impressed me so much.

I forgot to mention in my initial post in this thread, that I would like this to be a thread where people who have notes from series '99, '01, and '03 in their collections, can post them, and show them off.

So, have any '99's, '01's and/or '03's that you're particularly proud of? Post 'em here!! :)

    I see lots of Series 2003 ($1 and $100) and 1999 ($1, $10, and $100) notes, but I can't seem to find any Series 2001 notes

These series are all relatively common in circulation. Just for an example of what I find through one strap of $1's:
    2003: GF
    2001: KD and BF
1999: FA (usually way more in a strap.)

For series 1999 I usually find a ton of LS' and late L blocks. Most of them are very crisp too. Here is what my collection has as far as all of those series (1999, 2001, and 2003) go:
    $1's: 2003: E 66110111 I (strap find), G055* (stap find), F000* (teller grab), E103* (teller grab), G061* (teller grab), 2 K*'s (purchased @ face), & 2 consec G*'s (purchased @ face). 2001: A 11711777 D (tip from old door to door sales job), C*, & F*. 1999: 4 B*'s (1 friend grab, 3 nice crisp purchased @ face), 3 C*'s (purchaed @ face very nice and crisp), 3 E*'s ("), 3 H*'s ("), 3 L*'s (" 2 of which are consecutive).
    $2's: 2003: 4 I*'s (3 strap searching 1 purchased).
$5's: DL* (strap searching) & DC* (CHCU purchased). 2001: CL* (CHCU purchased). 1999: BJ* (purchased).
$10's: 4 DJ*'s ( 3 recent teller grabs and 1 CHCU purchased). 2001: CD* (CHCU purchased). 1999: BD* (CHCU purchased).
$20's: 2001: CL* (purchased). 1999: BL* (CHCU purchased).
    $50's: 2001: CE00003165* (CHCU purchased).
$100's: 2003: DB* (teller find). 2001: CB* (CHCU purchased). 1999: BA* (CHCU purchased). I have found many 1999 $100 *'s an IMO, they aren't worth keeping...

Today, I found a 1988A $1 star note that was printed in June of 1991 so beware, these old notes are still floating around. My friend that sold me a 1999 B* at face just a couple months ago got it from the bank. I also have found a 1995 $1 * strap searching and plenty of 2003 $1 stars strap searching as well. I think the rarest series in circulation today would have to be 2001. Normally I find way mor 1999's and very few 2001's. The strap I posted at the top is just different and wouldn't be average. Out of the 1990's series, 1995 is by far the most common.

Oh and not to mention, any regular '03, '01, or '99 $1's I find in circulation are usualy raggs except for 1999 LS and LG and several other 'L' district blocks...

I typically find a few of them when strap-searching $1s (yes, tbudwiser, they do tend to be in craptacular condition)

don't see large head non colorized $5 and up that often anymore, this includes 1999/2001/2003.

I think of these three series 1999 is the most common for me to find in circulation. I also agree with Tbud about the 1995 series. I think I find more 95's then I do of the OP three series combined. What does that say about the $1 dollar work horse. I guess for the 95 series everyone must be practicing catch and release.:)

I'd say for all denominations series 1996 & up, here is the least I see:
    $1's: 2001, $5's: 1999/2001, $10's: 1999/2001, $20's: 2001, $50's: 2001, $100's: 1999 (I do see lots of '96, '01, and '03 $100's...)

    Nice notes Clay!

    I really like your '01 $1 F*, and $5 CK*. Thanks for posting! :)

As for me, I had another '01 find in pocket change today.....a B-D $1, in very poor condition. Looked like it had been out in traffic, or something. These notes really are rags, whenever you do find them in circ.

Oh well, it'll buy me a cup of coffee in the morning. :D

It's funny that right after you mention this thread, it got me interested in starting to collect any 'A' blocks from Series 2001 and earlier. So today, I went strap searching. I only went through a total of 400 singles and I actually had a nice return. Here is what I found for anything Series 2001 & earlier 'A' block or just interesting:
2001 AA 5 digit serial number semi low that was the first block that was printed in November of 2001, also just a month after the significant event, 9/11, 1999 L02250050C trinary in decent shape, and a 1995 LA in decent shape...

That's cool. Sounds like some pretty good finds, there.

The low denom '01's do seem to be pretty few and far between in circ (at least, in decent condition) and are a favorite series of mine for that reason. I also like the signatures on the '01 notes.

When I go through straps, or pocket change, I always set aside any '01's I find, to check print run, etc, later on, when I have the time. Aside from the $10 I mentioned earlier in this thread, though, I haven't really found much worth keeping.
Even that $10 wasn't all that special. I was just impressed that it wasn't a rag, and the no color big head variety $10's and $20's are starting to show up less, and less, these days.

Let's seem some Series 1999 - 2003 *star* notes too!

For the most part, I collect St. Louis Federal Reserve District small size FRNs, because I am working on a set of them. Primarily the $1-$20 denominations to date, though I would like to expand to the early 'large numeral' notes someday, I just keep getting outbid on them. It's a very long, slow project to build such a set, for even just one district, let me tell you. A while back several CTers divided up our district interests and began (or continued) buiiding our own FRN district sets. There's no race or anything. The group has even fallen quiet in recent months, but that doesn't mean we are inactive. It's a great challenge to work on these notes and there are some intimidating "key" notes out there to contend with as well.

Here are a few of my notes from Series 1999 through 2003A that I have scanned and can share:
