I wanted to bring this auction to everyone's attention and expose a scammer.

The current seller bought this coin, knowing it was damaged goods.
    Here is the auction:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/280771817614

Now he is selling the same coin, as undamaged UNC..
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1857-Flying...ed-Cartwheeling-Lustrous-Beauty-/110781343856

I played dumb and contacted the seller to ask if it had been cleaned...
This is the response: (Remember, he KNOWS it has been cleaned.)

"It looks very original, but I don't guarantee anything other than coins being Genuine.
If you want a coin guaranteed to slab with no problems, then I highly suggest that you buy slabbed coins.

    Thank you for your interest.
    Mike"

I reported the auction, but I don't know that he is breaking any rules... ???

I don't buy on ebay anymore but use to avoid sellers who use terms like "monster" in their descriptions. I also don't see this coin giving much of a cart wheel effect like the Morgans do but then again I haven't seen it in person. I'm not even sure if a copper-nickel coin gives a cart wheel effect. Anyone know?

Thanks for the info... I will flag this seller as dishonest for my reference.

Unfortunately sleeze isn't against ebay policy. If it were they would lose half their business. Buyer beware.

Original luster with reflection that travels in a circular motion as you view the coins from various angles.

Yeah, a copper-nickel BU coin the size of a Morgan dollar can show the same luster.

Nothing is cartwheeling on this cent but the scratches!

Sometimes they get away with it, but other times the coin is sent back and they receive the feedback they deserve.
With high end items, the latter is more often the case.

This coin may still have cartwheel luster, but the hairlines from rubbing are evident, especially in the pictures of the first listing. I think the buyer will notice this and there will be a problem for the seller.
If the buyer does leave positive feedback, you can always send them a message with a link to the first listing. I'm sure they would be thankful.

I didn't know what it was either until I was doing research on fake Morgan dollars.
There is a good demonstration on youtube of the cartwheel effect.
If I can find the link I will post it.
When you tilt the coin at different angles, the light seems to flash around the coin. Better if you see the youtube demonstration. It's hard to explain in words.
The guy on youtube uses this method to filter out fake Morgans.

Coins of any metal can have cartwheel luster. On copper and bronze coins you can have a light cartwheel effect even after the red luster is gone. Some people refer to it as "glossy luster".

    It's jumped up to $587!
Spending that kind of dough, the buyer will probably be knowledgeable enough to realize when he has it in hand.

$607 now. Either someone is convinced this coin is better than MS60 or this is a shill bidding, which wont be a big surprise from this seller with "private listing - bidders' identities protected" option enabled.

I went to see the bid activity and it's a Private listing so that's a big red flag.
Who knows whats going on behind the scenes.

Anyone know the purpose of a private listing when the bidders ID can't be seen anyway as it used to be several years ago?

I was wondering the same thing.
Why go private when no one can figure it out anyway.

My Redbook shows this coin being a very big jump in value from MS60 ($300) to MS65 ($3000).
(I have the "Coin Digest" Redbook, not the Yeoman... I like it better.)
