Any one have any recommendations on Local coin shops I am in Staten Island ... Brooklyn and New Jersey OK also. I have to start looking at live coins before even attempting to purchase online..I probably will make my first purchases locally anyway, maybe all if I find the right place and dealer. Anthony
I am heading out to the Brooklyn Gallery on 4th ave...To buy and intercept Shield type Set album and check out the store.
Brooklyn Gallery is great for reference maerials, books, supplies, etc. As for coins? I don't think that I saw any the one time that I visited them. [Many years ago.] If you can go to the city, try Stacks, just for fun. There are others in NYC, but, not many smaller shops left.
Your right ... There prices are good on supplies I picked up an Intercept Shield Type Album for under $28 Also a 1776 mint set for 6 bucks to get the ball rolling ... He had an 1880 S PCGS MS63PL ....$160 ... The Numismedia book is $48 FOR ms63 NO REF FOR PL.... I have seen them at auction for between 90 and 110 I believe... I didnt even look at anything else.
Been shopping there for years. DO NOT buy their 2x2 cardboard flips. They are cheaper than the competition, but the quality is horrid. Haven't purchased any US coins from them, but they don't know very much about foreign coins and I've gotten some great bargains from them over the years. The foreign junk bin is my first stop when I go there. I've also purchased some of their bulk, well searched foreign coins at $10 per pound and found a few good errors and varieties that probably should not have been in there. =).
I know one on Long Island, New World Rarities, 670 Old Willets Path, Hauppauge, NY. Right off the LIE, and the Motor Parkway.
They run commercials on the local cable TV. Been by the place many times but never stopped in. I think they deal more high end but that's just a feeling, not a fact.
Good to know, thanks. I have also shopped there for years, (mail order obviously). Their safety flips are nice quality, though.
Similar location and maybe situation - a newbie looking for "local" shops. Went to Brooklyn Gallery only once. Parking was impossible. Was looking for a bit of junk/90% silver. If I recall correctly, a small retail(?) area near entrance and what appeared to be a deep back-room area. Collectibles of all kinds were stuffed everywhere and stacked to the ceiling. When I walked in counterman was brusque, but no-biggie as this is NY. At that time their sell price for junk/90% was high, so I declined. https://www.brooklyngallery.com/ I liked Central Jersey Rare Coins in Bound Brook, NJ better. It was a relaxed standalone shop with parking. Central tables with mint sets and common stuff you can look through, enclosed glass display cases around the perimeter with other items. More easygoing service and had more reasonable premiums on junk silver. http://www.centraljerseyrarecoins.com/home.html I had found a Staten Island dealer by searching PCGS or NGC website a while back, but never had a chance to check it out. Dan Davis/Staten Island Coin Investors, 718-370-2600, sicoins@aol.com, last at "1650 Richmond Ave, (corner Victory Blvd and Richmond Ave) in the Coral Lane shopping center, inside Jimmy's Fine Jewelry Exchange". I think afternoon hours Wed-Sat. but maybe should check first. Presume it's a booth type set-up in a bigger place.
Can you guys name some shops in the city you recommend? I go there pretty often and I wouldn't mind picking something up when I'm there.
I usually buy BCW brand safety flips off eBay. They are cheap enough and excellent quality. Also they come with blank paper inserts if you wish to write up some info and keep it in the same 2-part flip. This shop I think comissioned their own cardboard 2x2's made. They are terrible though: hard to fold due to incomplete perforation, usually fold misaligned, and the paper itself easily fragments into little dust particles that stick to the mylar window. I purchased a couple hundred and threw most of them out after I got the BCW ones. That's Bay Ridge for ya... a driver's nightmare. =) The store has been a cluttered mess since the first time I went there as a teen, about 12-13 years ago. The guy isn't the nicest, especially when he suspects you are getting a good deal off him. When it comes to US coins, this place is NOT for bargain hunters.
Thanks Hauppauge is a bit of a hike for me. I'll be willing to make the trip with a strong recommendation .... Do they have a large selection, are they reasonable and trustworthy ?
I don't get to the city that often any more ...Just such a pain in the ass with parking and traffic. Is that Stacks and Bowers on 57th your talking about?
ANA Dealer Directory Search by state, etc. +++ Also, does anyone know whether Liberty Coin Co. remained open after Mr. Halfon was murdered?
Perhaps you could go for a drive & visit: DR ARNOLD SASLOW 61 BLACKBURNE TER WEST ORANGE, NJ 07052-3540 (973) 243-1829 I just copied the address from the Internet so I believe it is the address of his coin shop. Call first.
Around the corner from Brooklyn Gallery on 8323 5th & 84th is a small coin shop that is one of the few that I was happy with. Google calls it Abboco. Got a number of silver Ikes there for reasonable prices.
The one I go to is in Astoria NY, called Astoria Coins & Collectibles. I've been to some in the city but I'm not a big fan of those stores.
