Thanks (not my auction, and I'm not really interested in the cent) http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCGS-Authen...16?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item23156ec260
It's why I was wondering. I know a few others have a lot of knowledge on these. I've been studying slabs since last night, but hadn't done much dating.
I'm not sure, looks closer to an OGH to me, but it's a different type of slab, rattlers are different, flatter and larger corners, typewriter written labels. I bought one of those for fun, took some pics, the slab looks nice but the PCGS holders hide the edges of the coins in those holders.
Cameron Kiefer listed them on his sample slabs site: http://www.sampleslabs.com/pcgs.html He lists it as PCGS 10, apparently it was more of an promotion slab done by PCGS for Scott Travers. He quoted David Hall saying they did 50,000 or 100,000, which is a ton of slabs. I'm not sure of a date for the slab though.
Sort of like a free slabbed coin with every ticket to the show, purchase, new membership type deal? No wonder they're all labeled "authentic". Thanks guys.
It wasn't to promote PCGS though. Apparently it was part of a "Coin collectors starter kit". So my guess is it was more of a "buy this collecting kit and get a authentic Lincoln". Btw, a guess at the date would be around '90-'98 the slab looks similar to PCGS 4 or 5 going by Conder101's system. In late '98 PCGS switched to the blue label. Funny enough, this might be the kit it was from (see the book description): http://www.amazon.com/Coin-Collector-Starter-Scott-Travers/dp/067660045X -That set was from '96, so it seems possible.
Yes they were in a coin collectors starter kit and they are based on the PCGS 5 generation slab. They came out around 1995.
There is a dealer here locally that has a whole box of these at 50 cents each. believe they are all 1925's
