My sisters and I are dividing my dad's estate. We have found a coin with additional markings. Can someone explain them? Do make the coin more or less valuable? Thanks in advance.
Less valuable in this case as well as most. The value is what the silver is worth. If it is circulated, the value did not change all that much. Good luck and sorry for your loss.
BTW: if you run a search on Coin talk for counterstamps, you will find plenty of information on the subject.
CT member BRandM is a counterstamp collector who may be able to help with this if you try to contact him or point him to this thread. I'd make the guess here that these stamps may have been more of a test using this coin for example rather than a counterstamped coin created another use.
