http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1103&lotNo=7557 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1160&lotNo=3714 I was wondering why these 2 coins sold for significantly more than current price guide values? What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Your link only offers an example of one coin. What price guides are you referring to ? CDN ? They don't reflect Prices for individual Varieties. The 1842 Half Dollar WB-101 variety " Small Date & Large Letters on the Reverse is quite scarce by means of the issues mere mintage alone. Add to that , survivorship of under 100 pieces in Mint State Preservation. ( PCGS & NGC combined ) and how infrequent these pieces hit the auction floor and you can see why bidders are very aggressive even in the lower grades when an example becomes available. Your question is a very good one, and quite understandable if you are unfamiliar with the issue varieties. I hope this helps you some.
I am a seated collector Dime half Dimes &half & dollars. here a list Pcgs has of date sizes it should help. Mint mark also come in lg&sm too. http://www.pcgs.com/Prices/PriceGui...1&SP=1&c=121&title=Liberty+Seated+Half+Dollar
Better date Seated Halves have been undervalued in the guides for years. I think I have only got a couple of the more common dates at guide in the last five years or so that I have been chasing them. I will note that I was one of the underbidders on that coin if my memory serves me right. My coin for that date is the more common medium date I got on eBay at over the price guide is a AU58.
Another thing to keep in mind is that price guides are not really great for Seated material, especially ones like these with nice original surfaces.
Here a 1859-O seated half I just got small date & repunched date.and some doubling on obverse& maybe a DDO. :kewl:
