"Henry, you mention GSA days. Man, I totally missed that boat........." I remember in the 1970s reading the advertisements in Coin World and the other mag - Coin Values?- for GSA CC coins priced anywhere from a few bucks for then junk CCs but now worth a lot of money, others selling for $35.00 and others more expensive At the time I thought all of them were over priced. Didn't buy any of them though my brother did. I started buying gold coins in 2008 when I'd been thinking about buying them for years.
an ultra rare youghal farthing from ireland, i was offered one for £75 and whilst i was deciding whether to buy it or not it was bought by another collector i ended up paying £450 for an example 3 years later.....
I guess mine would be the 25th ASE set. But thats mostly because I just got into coin collecting. If only I had started a few months ago.
I missed the boat when I decided not to buy the UHR gold coin, when I could have afforded it. I missed the boat when I decided to buy all the 4 coin gold proof eagles starting in 2006. I bought again in '07 but in 2008 I had monetery concerns and stopped the buying of the gold proofs. My mistake, as I could have afforded them but was too careful. And of course, I royally screwed up by FORGETTING the day and time for the 2011 25th Anniv. 5 coin st. My bad.
"Missing the boat"? All of the time. The truth is today is the best day for the rest of you life to buy coins. I miss deals as they come, still look back at deals I didn't get, but no sense looking back. Buy what you can today, since you can bet that most likely tomorrow you will regret it. Do the best you can, buy what you can when you can, and take pleasure in those deals you do get and can brag about in 20 years. One thing I know is that in 20-30 years time collectors will be referring to today as a golden age to collect, just like I look back at what I bought in the 90's, just like older collectors then talked about the 60's and so on. History is weird that way, huh? Chris
silver halves (40% and 90%) were relatively common even a few years ago. what I got ahold of I saved just long enough to flip for the few bucks it was worth at the time had a lower budget when I was younger. I collect a lot of recent circulation stuff (both coins and paper). relatively plentiful and cheap when it's new. At the time, I couldn't afford to pick up much or hold onto what I did pick up, maybe not buy/save as many examples as I would like. Heck, when I have more $ later in life, I may feel similarly about my collecting habits today.
I missed the boat on the 2008-W $10 proof buffalo when they were around and the 2008-W Double Prosperity set. Also the 2006-W 20th anniversary gold set. Those are the 3 things that stick out the most in my mind. Oh well what are you goona do?
