This is one of those coins that will easily straddle the line between an XF-45 and AU-50. I'm kind of jealous now, very nice coin!
I have a question about the color, the large cent I got has the same color and people said it was cleaned is this one cleaned?
It doesn't appear cleaned from what I can tell from the photos.. The dealer also makes no mention of a cleaning.
Thats good that means my coin is not cleaned also BTW, are trying to assemble a half cent collection?
I wouldn't say trying to assemble a collection per-say. I do like the early and middle dates along with the large cent middle and early dates. Affordability is the biggest obstacle for me as these can get a bit expensive. As to being cleaned, as I mentioned, I don't think it has been cleaned but hopefully someone with way more experience in them can offer some insight as well.
I think the color on this looks natural. The fields looks clean also.. so hopefully it grades in the AU50-53 range.. Hopefully, someone can offer a variety as well.
Be careful with grading half cents as they are graded much more strictly than large cents. Additionally, unless that coin is uncirculated, which I can not tell unless it's in hand, then it has probably been re-toned, although done nicely. The big clue for me is the wear areas of a coin should have a different color then the fields on normally worn coins. When the color is the same across the coin on a circulated copper it's almost always due to re-coloring. With that said, I know the TPGS will not grade it, but I do not deduct points on a retoned coin that looks nice like that one.
I'm not going to have it slabbed.. from what I have read and seen on some early copper dealers sites, they seem to either buy them raw or if graded, crack them out rather fast... I just feel it could be in the upper XF- AU50-53 range
This is a C-1 with the leaf centered under N. Both the others are centered under the left foot of N. Those are distinguished by the top leaf which is under E on C-2 and under the S like C-1 on the C-3.
Scenario 1 - A coin was circulated a bit before it tones and then was put away. Would this not naturally tone evenly? Scenario 2 - A coin is put away and begins to tone. Later it is taken and circulated before being put away again. Would this not tone differently, even though both are toned naturally? Just a thought.
Hmmm, both of those scenario situations would result in different tone looks. I didn't think about it quite like that before..
Thanks for the information so based on the chart I currently have that makes it an R2 which is the highest rarity type for an 1832.
Oh, thanks for this information.. Are these your coins? If so, they are very nice indeed.. Are there any specific reference books suited for half cents that are the preferred standard?
