Apologies for the mediocre insurance photos, but here's a couple of shots of my 1984-d Proof. (The coin itself is in a safe-deposit box).
I wouldn't think it's a capacity issue at San Fran. Just this year they started minting some of the ASE bullion coins. That and the mintages of proof sets have been going down in recent years, not up. Maybe they'll take over the commem proofs that are now done at Philly.
I think the big time coin boys has caught the goverments eye. The 2011 ASE sets showed them how much they can make by makeing up any set of their choice and some will buy it no matter the price. They also learned that they need not make the sets for all but price the few they put out to make just as much if not more. Who would not give you more of what you want for a almost double price. I wish i had that kinda of market
Not quite the first time, but it sure isn't a common occurrence. I wish I could find the article again to show as a reference, but I read once that there were even a few Proof Morgans struck in Denver. As I recall there are only like 4 or 6 known.
I can already picture the 26th anniversary silver eagle set with 24 coins (too bad they didn't think of this on the 24th anniversary). This set is sponsored by NGC and PCGS. It is as follows: ASE UNC coin with P mint mark ASE UNC coin without P mint mark but struck at P ASE UNC coin with D Mint mark ASE UNC coin without D mint mark but struck at D ASE UNC coin with S mint mark ASE UNC coin without S mint mark but struck at S ASE UNC coin with W mint mark ASE UNC coin without W mint mark but struck at W ASE Proof coin with P mint mark ASE Proof coin without P mint mark but struck at P ASE Proof coin with D Mint mark ASE Proof coin without the D mint mark ASE Proof coin with the S mint mark ASE Proof coin without the S mint mark ASE Proof coin with the W mint mark ASE Proof coin without the W mint mark ASE Reverse Proof coin with P mint mark ASE Reverse Proof coin without P mint mark but struck at P ASE Reverse Proof coin with D Mint mark ASE Reverse Proof coin without D mint mark but struck at D ASE Reverse Proof coin with S mint mark ASE Reverse Proof coin without S mint mark but struck at S ASE Reverse Proof coin with W mint mark ASE Reverse Proof coin without W mint mark but struck at W
A 'D' reverse proof would be fun, but I would love to see a full P,D,S proof set where all coinage is of proof coins.
I agree that a D mint reverse proof SAE would be awesome as well. If you want a P,D,S set of proof Cannyn, you can purchase a 1984 Olympic Set. There are 4 proof coins, a P, D, S and a W. Here's an eBay auction with a REALLY good pic of the D: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-D-Olym...68?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item564983b944
You guys have to stop thinking out loud like this or a certain someone will start creating these, which will rebirth the argument again, of fake or whatever.
Some of Denver's circulation strikes are so perfect that they already look like branch mint proofs. I do agree that they will probably have a very limited proof production and there's no plan in the works to transfer proof set production to Denver. If they do these as well as other numismatic coins they'll all be PR-70's.
