Hello - my brother just came into town and has a nice looking stone mountain half with light blue toning on the obverse. I tried to capture the toning in the photo but it turned out darker than the coin appears in hand.

QUESTION for the experts - looking to maybe send this coin in with his ASE 25th box to get graded. What do you think this coin would grade? Thanks for your help in advance. Any chance of a star with the blue toning?

It's impossible to say one way or the other based on your pics. I can see little hints of blue here and there so I can kind of imagine what the coin might look like and I've no doubt it's pretty. But a TPG might not think it market acceptable toning.

And luster plays a large part in a coin's grade, and you can't judge that by your pics either.

I can't see many marks, but I can see what are probably light spots, and those may be a detraction.

    Sorry - just can't say.

It looks like it might have some breaks in the luster, so I'm just guessing that it would grade AU. If it wouldn't grade MS64, I don't think it would be worth submitting.

It might just be the image, but it looks like a cleaned AU example to me. Either way, I would be shocked if it is of sufficient quality to justify having it graded.

Not if the cost of certification is a high percentage of the value of that "nice piece".

I wouldn't play the grade game on that one. Enjoy the piece as the good Lord intended......in hand, always to love and admire. :)

I was thinking the obverse looked wiped. I'd pass on sending it in from those pics.

I would concur with both it may be AU and the TPG may look sideways at the toning. In my experience even blue toning over one side of a coin is not very natural. Its extremely hard to get to that oxidation progression and not see traces of preceding colors evenly.

Just my opinion, and I could be wrong of course. Nice coin, I have always liked these.

Is per chance what appears as toning in the image is rub. As it seems most pronounced on the high points.
