Hi there! I apologize for being a complete novice here...I'm actually hoping for a bit of advice. My boyfriend is a bit of a coin collector (more of a precious metals enthusiast, but most of his investment is in coins). Years ago a friend of his gave him a lovely gold coin as a present, and he carried it around with him ever since as a sort of good luck charm. Sadly he lost it on a recent trip to NYC - we hunted around everywhere and unfortunately it looks as if it's gone for good. With Christmas coming up, I wanted to get him a replacement gold coin, but I'd like to put a bit of thought into it as well and get him something that would appeal to the collector in him as well as just matching the bullion value of the original coin. I would like to spend up to $100-$150 and I think he'd be more intrigued by something domestic (US) rather than foreign. Does anyone have any ideas for particularly noteworthy, historic or otherwise interesting gold coins I can hunt for on Ebay in that price range? I want to get him something fairly special. I understand this is a very broad question, so thanks in advance for any tips or pointers!
Here is a Royal Mounted Police 1/25 oz. for $119, with box & paperwork: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-Canadian-Royal-Mounted-police-Gold-coin-1-25-oz-/150657039934?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2313dbfe3e I'm sure your boyfriend would enjoy this coin very much. I love Canadian gold.
welcome. Unfortunately, gold is around $1700 per ounce so any god sized coins are well over budget. You might be able to get an old gold dollar in your price range - might not be in the best condition though. Another option would be a modern tenth ounce american gold eagle. They are about the size of a dime and are pricd by gold weight plus a few bucks. A local coin shop would likely have them with your choice of dates, maybe 2011 or the year you met etc.
Yeah, as someone else stated, with gold at $1700/oz, you won't find much in that price range, let alone anything special. The closest thing I could think of to meet your criteria would be a common, 1/10 American Gold Eagle. But all of those I've seen lately are going for $200. Somebody was selling a bunch of them on the selling forums here not too long ago. Don't know if they sold them all. Tell them your story and maybe they might give you a deal on one. Some people who have a lot of these got them for $30 to $50 a piece a while back. So they might have a little wiggle room on profit. Whether they're willing to or not for you is another story. BTW, this time if he decides he still wants to carry it, I"d recommend putting it in a plastic air-tite holder. This will increase the size making it a little less easier to lose and fully protect it from wear. I've got a zip up pocket in my walllet. I carry a Morgan silver dollar in an air-tite that was my grandfather's and a 1882-S $5 gold Liberty in an air-tite just for fun. They can't fall out. I carry my wallet in my front pocket as well. Good luck.
Good idea. I picked up a holed gold dollar for around $70 a couple years ago. People used to do that years ago and give them to their sweethearts as love tokens to be worn on a necklace. Gold $1 are quite small though. It's an option.
Better off buying 1/10 ounce American eagle which you can get for around 190 and is widely recognised.
