I've been wanting one of these awesome looking $5 notes for the past 3 years. I finally found one I really liked in an acceptable condition to me. The bidding on it was vigorous. You'd think you could sneak in a cheap win on a holiday, but not the case. I put my max bid in at the last second and finally won it. First ebay win from my smart phone. (It's great how well that app works!) http://www.ebay.com/itm/270852727599?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 Anyway, what do you guys think about this? Was this a good deal, too much or about right? I can't imagine getting one with this grade for much cheaper. I've looked at quite a few of them. Does PPQ typically add a premium? I assume it means Premium Paper Quality?? I know I saw others with similar grades that the sellers were asking more for but didn't look as good as this one. I'm very happy winning this.
I think that one can expect to pay some premium for ppq or epq over the regular freidberg guides, so the price is not out of the ballpark. I do not know if Freidbergs prices are higher than or lower than a more current publication
I think yoiu did well...nice looking note....and given the llarge amount of verbal diarrhea accompanying the description....seems if you paid bt the word, you got a steal! Honestly, way too much wording. Perhaps if the seller didn't expound on 'sawbucks', mooolah', 'large', and stuck to the facts about the note itself, it might have brought more. People tend to tire of long-winded descriptions, and pass....
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I really didn't read the whole description. The pictures were adequate. I've looked at a lot of these. In this range and lower, there always seems to be one problem or another that bugged me about them. Usually stains or bad folds. This one's pretty clean though for the grade. I'm not real big into currency so I don't know all that much. I would like to have all of these notes from 1914 eventually.
PCGS Currency Grading Standards (see for description of PPQ) PCGS Currency Numerical Scale It's a nice looking note and a good start to building a set of these large size notes. The seller was overtly misrepresenting the note saying "gem" in the title for a EF45 with PPQ, and again in the description, it's not two folds away from a 66 or 67 if PCGS gave this a 45. Similarly, all that quoted verbiage on note history and types was unnecessary for the listing. It doesn't surprise me that bidding was vigorous on a holiday, there are just more people bound to be spending time on their hobby or at this time of the year shopping online. I think you will find that the currency market is quite robust and active when it comes to quality grade notes. Let us know what you think when you get the note in hand. Congrats!
Congrats on the new aquisition! :thumb: What matters most is that you are happy with it! I may pick up a 1917 USN $2 this Sunday. If the condition is as good in hand as the pictures show, it will be worth going a little over on price. Have to love the Large Size Notes!!!
