Can i 1909-s VDB have a weak strike on the S? When looking in a X30 loupe you can see it better then in the pictures. The rim on the reverse is worn into the VDB so you can look at the "." Color should be off i messed with the pictures to see it a little better.
Looks like a regular old non-S 1909 VDB to me with what appears to be PMD that slightly resembles what you might be seeing. I'm unaware of weak strikes for the 1909 S VDB's. Sorry!
im sure its not just a mark. because you can see the bottom. just not with these pictures. (i dont really know why.) the whole S is clear under a X30 loupe.
Well, from the pics, it's a 1909 VDB without the mint mark. My advice since you might not be able to get a photo of what is seen by actually holding it, take it to a dealer to have it looked at and confirmed.
Yeah im going to. The dealer i know had back surgery and wont be back till next week =( dont like waiting.
I also think it is a Philadelphia mint coin, the mark you are seeing appears to be too high to be an S mintmark.
I though it looked like the same position as Mint mark #1. if you notice right under the 0 to the left there is a bag mark or something on the coin. and what i see as the S is right under some.
I do not think that it's a "S" coin. The area that you have "ID" is too high for the "S". Look at a copy of Bill Fivaz's Counterfeit Detection Guide on page 6-7. 1. The "S" mintmark must have a serifs which are vertical and parallel to each e other. 2. A small die chip is usually visible at the inside back of the upper loop of the "S". 3. High grade specimens will often show a depression in the upper serif of the "S". 4. The center crossbar of the "B" in the V.D.B. on the reverse must be diagonal, not horizontal. This is strigt out of the book.
It is definitely not an S VDB. All S VDB's have the dot between the D and B as centered rather than right after the D. See http://www.cointalk.com/t78043/. That dot is not centered.
my final question. am i seeing things with the S or did someone actually try to fake it. if i am just seeing things then would you say this is a real 1909 VDB?
