Is it my imagination or does it seem like on the John Tyler D's the mint mark is never in the same spot.
First, it is called a Presidential Dollar. Second, what do you mean when you say it never is in the same spot?
It seems like on a roll of John Adams D, that if you look at the obverse (portrait) then look at the edging of the coin, the Mint Mark ends up in 6 different spots. I don't know if that is just because the way the coin was minted like LindeDad suggested or if there's another reason why.
I didn't know if it was a variation or just something random. But I think you and LindeDad in Post #2 suggested that its the way the minting process is with the coins.
The edge lettering is put on after the obverse and reverse designs are minted. The coins enter the edge lettering device in a random manner, in random orientation and sometimes facing up, sometimes down. These aren't varieties. Guy
It's too soon for a book devoted solely to the Prez Dollars. The only thing you can do is check the CONECA website and/or the CPG. By the way, like others said, the placement of the mintmark is totally random. If you doubt it (which I don't think you do) open a roll of Prez Dollars, hold them so the coin is standing on the edge and roll all 25 across a hard surface like the dining room table. As each coin comes to a stop and falls on the obverse or reverse, make a note where the mintmark is situated.......1 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 3 o'clock, etc. Of course, the same is also true whether the mintmark is right-side up for the obverse and the reverse, too! By the way, when you make note of the position of the mintmark once you've rolled the coin, it doesn't matter if it is AM or PM. Chris
Dude, come on now. It's already been stated quite clearly these are not varieties on the Presidential dollars. It's a random occurence, which happens after the coin has been struck, how the coin winds up in the edge lettering device. No error No variety No premuim Worth $1
Relax! I didn't read anywhere in his last question that he meant mintmark varieties. He just said varieties, plain and simple. Chris
Just looking for a book for the President coins like the Lincoln Pennies have the Cherrypickers guide. The only book I have seen is a Whitmans book on the President Dollars. Wasn't sure if there was another book out there.
Personally, if I was to get a book on the series, I'd wait until a year or so after they're done with the series. Too soon for a book devoted to them IMO.
Books on them might be written after the series is done very unlikely in the middle. Very likely with the checked happenings with stolen errors and such it might be interesting. BTW Mike Wallace has a web site that has a lot of interesting information about all of the small dollars that is worth checking out. http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page30.html Link is to the Prezzy dolllars.
