I'm not a coin collector, nor do I know anything about coins, but I was just curious what this is? http://www.dausses.org/images/front.jpg http://www.dausses.org/images/back.jpg Is it just a really old Silver Dollar? I recieved it when my grandmother passed away... It actually looks pretty fake to me... almost like it was cast out of a hardened lead... and it scratches relatively easily as you can tell from the pictures... Anyone got any more info on it? Anyway, thanks in advance! -Brad
Looks fake to me, but our moderators can give you a more definitive answer. Even if it is genuine, the value would be for the silver content, as the coin is worn and scratched. However, the sentimental value to you may be much more, since it was from your grandmother.
The coin is so worn it is hard to say for sure - but I don't see anything that jumps out at me to say it is fake. And even in mint state - this is an inexpensive coin. I'd keep it for sentimental value if I were you.
Thanks guys for your replies... I didn't figure it was worth much, just really wanted to know what it was. It does have a lot of meaning and almost tells a story with how worn it is... I'll be holding on to this one just for sentimentals... Thanks again for your replies! -Brad
Brad, this is a 1900-O Morgan, worth under $12 if it is a genuine dollar. I does have significant damage to the coin, which would further degrade its financial worth. The right wing of the eagle on the reverse looks too close to the head of the eagle to me. If you can feel the softness of the metal in your hand (like pewter or lead), not much chance that it is genuine. If it feels hard to the touch, then your coin has seen really tough days. But that doesn't matter, cause it is a keepsake (if you choose to consider it as such), and the worth is secondary. Welcome!
