real but it has been cleaned they did'nt have away to seal them from the the elements in those days plus the rest of the coins you found to would lead me to believe its real
I am torn on this one. The reverse throws me off. It makes me feel like it is not authentic. I can't tell you why, and I know you weighed it, but it just has that fake half bust look to it. I really hope for your sake I am wrong Dennis. If it does turn out to be real, it is a shame the guy had to clean it. There is not that much wear, and it prolly had nice eye appeal. BTW what are you doing droppin these coins on the ground to hear the silver cling!? =]
does anybody know who john binns is or the stupid cheap coin show that was on 227 when robert chambers came in well john is on 320 on directv he just sold a 1849 gold dollar that was cleaned for 99.00 plus he still negoites prices with you . he said he locked in 5 year contract with that channel. its diamond shoppingtv he's on 2hrs tonite from 8 to 10 then wed. nite from 7 to 11 he's preselling the 25th 70's for2,699.95 per set Iseen aan tv selling unopened box's of 5 for 5,555.95 and send them in for you at 40.00 a coin can you say rip off I'am glad i got my box of 5 back already goodnite and happy thurs.
Wow ! Such a find. Beats a real treasure hunt. No matter what condition the coin is in, the minimum for just AG condition is 150.00 which covers your total cost. With luck like this you should be in Vegas. Dave
Looks authentic, IMO. But, as previously stated, it's been harshly cleaned. Might wanna send it to ANACS for a 3rd-party grade and authentication. Flat $12-$15 (depending on which route you take for the submission). -Brian
At 1st glance I don't think it's real , never seen a date look like that for an 1805 coin , also on the reverse , the eagles left leg should be holding a vine throgh its claws , don't see a vine here . Hope I'm wrong . There is no Known Overton # where the vine is missing . I'm going to say fake . IMO
Have you guys ever tried to clean a silver coin with an eracer. It works and it will not ruin the coin Try it with a less value coin first and learn as i have. I cleaned all the silver coins i own in this way and they all look normal not pre cleaned.
well, sorry to say this but it doesn't look good. All known 1805 varieties have a stem thru the claw. Unless it is a new unlisted Overton variety [not likely].
Not only is it bad advice, it isn't true either. Eraser marks are absolutely detectable and any coin that has them will be designated as having been harshly cleaned and will lose between 50-80% of its value be cause of it.
Well, I'd say 13.49 is lighter than say, 13.50 which is the actual weight of a real 1805 Half Dollar.. It's 1/10th off the original weight, I'd say it's silver in respect to the weight.
I tried to attrib the half last night, but could not, missing vine or not. I thought that may be a grease fill problem or something, but even discounting the missing vine issue I could not find a matching Overton #. It should have been easy, the coin has five berries, and there is not too many O #'s with 5 berries, but nothing was even close on matching the obverse with a 5 berry reverse The coin also seems to be missing the lower most curl on liberties forehead. The stars for an '05 also are all wrong. They should be broad and close together. Some of the stars are downright dainty. Mike
No, it's 1 one hundredth of a gram off the the correct weight. And that amount is well within mint tolerance levels. Not that I am saying the coin is genuine or not. I'm merely correcting your math.
Sorry, typo's suck. Thanks for the correction, I meant 1/100. For all we know his scale didn't go beyond two decimal points and the weight could be 13.499, which puts it even closer to it's true weight.
Weight of a coin is one way to tell a fake , if it's way off it's a fake . Being the right weight doesn't make it a real coin , only that it was probably made of coin silver , which the Chinese now use on their higher end fakes . When a coin is the right weight you then move on to other tests to determine if it's real . On early half dollars a coin has to match one of the Overton #s the fact that it doesn't means it is most likely fake . Unless it's a new discovery piece which is highly unlikely .
dennis68 howdy it souunds like nobody has whimans redbook .I noticed when I got on this after IIIgot back from dr. that they were say since the stem did'nt go throuh the claw it wasnt' real but it is they show two pictures one going through the claw and one where its not going through look on page 187 in in the 2011 redbook.its probaly on the same page in 2012 I thinkit will on all your questions. good luck hope it helps rkf happy thurs.
There is a lot of talk on the weight being correct on this coin, but it is not. At 13.49 it is actually quite heavy. With that much "apparent" wear it should be at least 2/10's light at a bare minimum and probably closer to 3 or 4 tenths. No typo here, I am talking tenths. Mike
