I bought this huge collection of flawless 1938-1970 Jefferson Nickels I don't collect NICKELS, 5 whitman folders 1909-1974 Lincoln Wheats and a old cigar box full of Wheat Cents about 3000 of them for $120 for the lot. Anyway so far I found this 1944 D with a S between the 9 & 4 above the D is this a known error?
Mind taking a few close-up photos of the mintmark? From this angle and distance, I see nothing out of the ordinary... You may want to check this link and compare the OMM 1 & 2 pictured to what you may see on your coin that we are unable to- http://lincolncentresource.com/OMMS/1944omm1and2.html -Brian
That's the best I could do! I'm tell ya this S is clear as day. There's some raised areas of the S right above the D. up load the closeup photo to (your) picture file and ZOOM in on it. I could see the S under 5X mag. And the coin is a fairly good MS condition and red. Would it be worth any money?
The lines of the S are still there follow my photo here, and you will see it. Tomarrow I will try to get better closeups.
i see what you are talking about in the second pic.. is the S raised? ... wow that looks like its pretty far up from the D....i can't find any S over D coins on any other websites tho
Yes, raised! I believe it would be considered a D over S a RPM? But, yes the lines of the S are raised and leaving a fine line of the whole S. The grade of the coin is very nice also, red in color and crisp strike! I just don't know how to grade so well.
Even after enlarging your photo, it is still too hard to tell. It would be best for an expert to view the coin in-hand for confirmation. Chris
I see what Sarah sees, it isn't the mintmark, just a polishing or slight luster-wear in the form of an "S". If it were true "S" it would be raised higher above the fields.
Here's a RPM that's not so raised. I have a few of these and they are really hard to photograph. http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1956&die_id=1956d1mm008&die_state=lds
Yes, I think your right. After seeing the photos of the 56 D / D in you link attached. My 44 D / luster & toning formed a S to the coin. Thanks for helping. It's a keeper, just on the better grade and color. But no D over S here
I looked more closer, to the inside of the D and found a raised S shape, but, appears to be horizontal to the D. The S above the D was nothing. I'm not tring to build something that is not, but, could someone take a look at these photos and help! What's going on in the inside of the D?
Going by your drawing in post #5, a "S" struck there would have truncated the point of the 4 since the mintmark was struck after the devices including the date. Even if the "S" was ground off ( hard to do that close to the date) and the die sent to Denver for the "D", the 4 would still be the same, the tip would be "chopped". So concentrate on the tip of the 4. It appears to just be surface "noise" to me. IMO. Jim
I think i see what you mean, it looks like one of those random raised small die lines that happens to be in the shape of an S to me. Maybe try taking different pictures through a loupe or something.
I posted some new pics, what is that in the D? There's a raised letter in a S shape and runs through the D POST #19
