And then the collectors would complain that the mint changed the rules and ruined the aftermarket and cheated because they got all those early sales on the pretext of some rare varieties in the set and then took those rarities away etc etc etc. And can you imagine the screams from the collectors/speculators who have already bought sets in the aftermarket at big mark ups when they would tend see their coins value plummet?

Collectors are never satisfied. Back in the 80's an 90's the commems had authorized mintages around 2 million. Slaes were WAY below the authorized mintages and collectors complained that mintages were too high and that prices in the aftermarket were less than issue price. So mintages came down to the 500 to 750 thousand level and collectors weren't happy because although prices in the aftermarket didn't fall they didn't rise either because everyone who wanted one had one. So then they dropped the mintages down to 500 thousand or less total for both proof and Unc, and even smaller mintages for other sets and now collectors were unhappy because there were sell outs and some people couldn't buy coins direct from the mint and had to pay higher prices in the aftermarket. No matter what they do, collectors are going to complain about it.

well said but i am sure i had convinced nd ont he formula that there would be no instant rarities and only colectors would be interested speculators could quit unfortunately the mint is no longer following th eformula nor did it give them good returns but it was good for collectors though not good for prices

I just saw this set for the first time today in a store setting.. Until now it was just online and I have to say these are some beauties. Even the mint packaging was very nicely put together.. This was an open box and the guy was asking 1500.00.. I had to see it but it was like no way for that kind of money.

Seeing them live makes me wish I could get a set now..

My experience trying to order a set from the UK was similar, so i did not get a set either. The performance of the US Mint site was worst then it was for the Lincoln Chronicles set which I did manage to order.

Did not surprise me at all about the quick sellout of this set.

So congrats to those who got and condolences to those who did not.
