Yeah, you got it, I missed out on getting me a couple sets of the 25th ASE sets. Was at work and couldn't get the opportunity to hop to the mint's website. To give you a general idea, by the time I got off work they were all sold out, it was that quick! I was looking to send one out for grading and sell the other. Anyone else missed out? Any interesting stories about that day that they care to share? A fellow coin collector ended up spending 3 hours online only to get the dreaded "sold out" notification. He ended up buying a set through a third party for double the selling price.
I was bummed I missed out because after all the commotion, I learned how easy it would've been to make a quick $600+ on them.
I missed out because I was almost arrested for having my mother's card at the ready at school. Had to call my mom to clarify, when I got on a computer, I was bummed to see it was sold out.
There is a thread posted on NGC (which originated on another forum) where a guy was bragging about getting 20 sets using different debit cards, addresses, family, etc. He could care less about others. Chris
That is a real shame Chris. Makes me wish I had ordered more sets just to sell at cost to true collectors. I ordered my one set for my collection at 12:15 on 10/27, and it is safely in my possession. I know a lot of people who collect ASEs, and they all were able to get their set directly from the mint. I hear a lot of people online in different forums talking about missing out. Many of them are people relatively new to the coin scene or to ASEs, and some are just unhappy they missed out on all the profit. TC
I saw that myself at another forum.. I was like, no wonder many others didn't get any and I am sure he wasn't alone in doing that.. I just wasn't able to get thru and I tried for several hrs. before finally seeing they were gone... I just wanted a single set to hold onto. While having a second set would have been nice to sell, I scraped money together for a few weeks just hoping to get a single set...
There's already 7 pages of horror stories on this in the contest forum. For anybody that missed out, flyers10 is offering a contest to sell somebody one of his 'graded' sets for $325. The criteria to enter is describe your experience or why you missed out. http://www.cointalk.com/t195011/
I was thinking about getting one, but then cancelled the Idea because the pictures of the set were not very nice, 300$ + shipping was too much and I do not collect American silver to begin with. Then I saw the videos of the actual sets .. WoW, they are really nice, to add to that at that day i had the day off and could have bought one from the mint if I tried. I am not participating in the competition because I think an American collector will appreciate the set more than me.
Has any other mint release sold out so quickly and what are your thoughts in petitioning congress for a second release?
i am afraid releases like this harm the hobby. the heart break that i see and feel makes me wonder is it worth it to ruin some of our days feeling sorry because we missed out on some coins. Surely the mint can do something so no one ever feels this way again
I was in Bermuda for work. The internet crapped out for most of the afternoon. I did manage to get two sets in my shopping cart at about 2pm, but couldn't complete checkout until 7:15. Everybody knew this was underpriced and would sell out fast, except apparently the US Mint. They should make it up to collectors by releasing more of the reverse proof and 2011-S.
Sorry to those that missed out. For whatever reason, you missed out on the profits to be had with this release and now you want to be made whole by demanding the mint manufacture and release more of them? Then what? Everyone has some and you still have no profit. No matter the game, there will always be more losers than winners. The house always makes the rules. If you don't like the rules of the game, don't play!
You know what, this is what the hobby needs, us mint controlling total production aside. Isn't it all part of the thrill of the chase? Wouldn't be as fun if there wasn't that element of hard work involved. To be honest, it was an investment in time for a lot of the buyers. Name one guy who went through the buying process and checkout in a few minutes like any normal online purchase.
The mint put out the rules quite clearly well before any sales were made. I don't remember seeing anyone complaining that those rules were unfair prior to the sales. Now those that missed out, for whatever reason (Bad luck? Laziness? Some combination of both?) are claiming that the mint was unfair in their distribution procedures. The time for complaints was BEFORE sales began, not now. The place to complain was to the mint, not here. Most of this is just sour grapes. I've missed out on other issues before (5oz. ATB's) but you didn't hear me crying about being left out. I didn't get the '08/'07 ASE either, but I'm not demanding the mint make more, either. I knew the rules going in, I played by the rules, and I lost. Oh, well! Start the next game. Again, I say that if you don't like the rules, you don't play the game.
25th Av set Next year about this time you will be able to get a set at cost. that how the 20th av set went. unless silver jump up big time just sit back and wait. :kewl:
The only thing I missed out on was being able to participate in the 40 threads about the 25th anniversary set.
