Mine arrived today. The coins and case are in near prefect condition. Hats off to the mint for this deal. Anybody else got theirs yet? And now, Ric continues the "happy dance"
Once the allotted numbers are reached, they are only available on the secondary market. Do not give up yet. The regular proof set will be available soon. Snatch it up early, as this is the first ever 11 coin set. This will go fast. You can say you heard it here first.
There will be no more silver quarter Proof sets - at least not this year. The Mint announced that production of these sets has stopped - sales were about 601,000 sets.
National Dealer, you stated earlier that you had sent several off to NGC. Are those to be graded and slabbed? If so, do you remove them from the case to be sent off and how difficult is that process. I would be afraid of damaging the coins.
Is the mint going to release the other half of the coin set in silver proof? The Nickel, Dime Penny part. I got the Silver Quarter Proofs and the Mint Set with 2 lenses. Make me feel like I got shorted on the silver side.
The silver proof set will have 11 coins, including the 5 quarters. I never order the quarter set, because I get the quarters with the full set. I can understand though that those collecting state quarters only might not want the other coins. The bad news is the price will be $37.95, up a whopping $6.
I'm not sure, probably August or September. You might want to register online with the mint -- then when they become available, you will receive an e-mail.
Just to make sure I am not confusing anyone - the full Silver Proof sets will include the quarters as well. The annual Proof set is not sold in parts or halves. But this year - because of the popularity of the SQs, particularly the silver versions, the Mint decided to make the quarters available as a separate set by itself.
We sent a total of 72 quarters to be slabbed. Getting them out is the easy part. A very soft cotton cloth on the desk in case of accidental dropping. Gloved hands, and lots of holding the breath.
Extending the remarks of ND: Slip a long edge of an X-Acto knife blade into the seam where the two halves of the case meet, and twist. The case will separate slightly. Repeat the process at another point about an inch away. Repeat until you can grasp each half and gently pull the case apart. The case halves adhere to one another, but are not glued or sonically sealed.
i have silver proof sets with the 5 quarters...now there is a 5-quarter silver proof set but it's sold out. i'm getting the 11-coin 2004 silver proof set when it comes out. so....i'm not really missing anything by not having the 5-quarter silver proof set, correct? thanks a ton!!!!
You are correct. The silver quarter sets sold in the full silver Proof set will be identical the silver quarter sets sold individually.
Okay...allow me a newbie question then. If approx 601,000 silver sets have been sold (and they are sold out) does that mean they will mint additional silver quarters for the 11 piece set when it comes out, or did they hold back a certain number of them? I'm guessing they have sets held back? Thanks, Rob
It means both things actually. Too many people make a big deal out of the Mint's marketing plans. The Mint knows the silver quarters are very popular and a big seller. So this year they decided to sell them twice. Once as a set containing just the quarters. Of course they made sure to sell this set first because they knew people would buy it. But the very same quarter sets - in the same packaging - are now being sold in the full annual Silver Proof sets. The Mint also knows people will buy these sets because they want the rest of the silver Proof coins too. But to get them - these people have to buy the silver Proof quarters all over again. In effect - buying the very same thing twice which allows the Mint to make even more profit. You have to give them credit - it's brilliant marketing strategy. Of course it increases the mintage numbers of the silver Proof quarters by however many silver Proof quarter sets they sold - in this case just over 600,000. So that will have an effect on the price of these sets in the secondary market. The price will be lower than usual because there are more of them. As for the production schedule - the Mint began striking coins for the '04 sets in the fall of '03. They continue to make these sets until the fall of '04 when they begin making the annual sets for '05 or until they think they have made as many as they can sell. So it's not that the Silver Proof Quarters are all gone - they are not. It's just you can't buy them all by themselves anymore. There will likely be another 2 million or so sets sold as part of the full Silver Proof sets.

Looks like I'll be one of them...just bought the 5 piece set tonight, and now I see that the full set will be available July 22. Oh well, should've come here first! Thanks for the reply. Just subscribed to the forum and I am very glad to have found it. Rob
