Three more responses Coin dealers generally buy them for 5¢ over face and sell for 10¢ over, for your run-of-the-mill Ikes. I guess it's a convenience thing so people don't need to call a few banks. But, hardly worth the effort, in my opinion. How much do you sell them for? Is there an easy way to tell a silver Ike (not proof) besides using a sensitive scale? All I have is a 0.1 ounce postal scale. Just call some banks in the closest city to you. Shouldn't take many calls. You should find enough. A lot were made, and most sit in banks. The closer you are to a gambling city, the better luck you'll have.
I ocasionally ask for them at banks but I keep any that I get. The last time I asked for any Eisenhower dollars the teller started looking through her tray of golden presidential dollars for him!
I ask for them at banks, but they claim to not have any. I live in a rural area and there aren't many banks. It's hard enough to get halves. lol
Wow, if you can make that work, more power to you. Suckers. Wont be long before they'd be right, when they mint Ike again. Why are so many people here saying they keep them? What for?
A local dealer got lots of them for face, I sold some junque silver for 124, and told the dealer I would take them Ikes off his hands, he negotiated to 120 Ikes. I checked em first for varieties, but I suspect they had been checked pretty well before I got them, I kept the nicest looking ones for myself. I went to the ana show and picked up the Daniel Carr fantasy 1970 and 1975 Ikes, Then I went back to the coin shop and told the dealer I found some rare Ikes in the bunch he sold, and showed the Carr pieces, he grabbed his greysheet and started looking through to see the worth of them, I told him what they were but it was fun while it lasted.
I haven't seen one in circulation since the 1980's. My bank does not keep them in stock. Infact, they don't supply rolls of the current presidential series, and at best, may have one or two $1 presidentials in the cashiers cage.
I haven't seen anyone get $2 each for circulated Ike's on E-bay unless they were special somehow. ie Type 2's, but more power to you. The guy with 31 T2's and 13 silver from circulation is VERY lucky. That just doesn't happen with this series. I personally like the series and have a small collection that I've come to appreciate. The series itself is very unappreciated and I like that.
