I have recently acquired a few morgan dollars in a deal, but the seller also gave me some known fakes that are unmarked. I have had these sitting on my desk for quite a while now. What should I do with them? Is there somebody who would take them off my hands for me? Anybody able to mark them copy? I really do not want to sell these and pass them off as real, because I am an honest person. I also don't wanna give these to anybody who will try to turn around and scam somebody. Anybody have an idea what I should do?
Nice to hear there are still a few honest people left in society... If you'd really like to keep them from being resold by a dishonest person lookin' to make a quick buck, you must either keep them, or have them destroyed. You might want to try dropping 'em off at a local coin shop to see what they might be able to do with them. If you know someone that has a small set of those die punch letters (little ones) you could mark them yourself..
Before you do anything like counterstamping them, be sure to take plenty of photos, including close-ups so that you will have diagnostics to share with others. Chris
I actually didn't get burned on them, I made note that they were fakes and said I'll take them for practically nothing to see what I can do with them so others don't get burned. And Chris, what do you mean? As in for people who study counterfeits?
Why not keep them intact and sell them for melt if they're infact Silver composed (which I doubt they are if they came outta China-land)? What's the need to take a saw to 'em? Lol... -Brian
Brian, in my "limited" experience with refiners they seem to put items of interest aside for themselves. Unless he stamped them before selling for melt, it would be a safe way to prevent them from making it back into the open market. But we know now that they're not silver, so it is moot.
First, have an expert confirm they are indeed fake. Second, I agree with rev's advice, find someone with the metal punches and mark them COPY yourself.
