bullion value of lincoln penny dated before 1982 is $0.02332. while that after 1982 is $0.009. jefferson nickel at $0.054.
I've heard other people talk about hoarding pennies, but it seems like a lot of work for the return. Copper is going to have to get alot higher for me to consider saving bags of pennies.
There was a story several years ago about the guy who hoarded $50 bags of lincolns in his attic and just kept putting them up there. Eventually they broke through the ceiling and almost killed someone. :mouth:
bullion value for nickels and pennies as of may 10, 2006. the bullion value of nickel is $0.057. penny before 1982 is $0.025 and after 1982 is $0.014
Yes there is a similar thread about the cost of the cent, nickel, etc. Although most of us would not go and melt down our coins, there are a lot of people that would not hesitate in doing just that.
Like my uncle's neighbor who burns the copper off of pennies and gives the zinc to my cousin. What in the world does he do with all of that copper, because I know he doesn't sell it. By the way, my cousin enjoys pennies which she mistakenly thought were silver. She was dissapointed to find out that I told her they weren't.
I've been trying to remember, but can't put my finger on it. It was news in Illinois in the early '70s when copper was a problem. I'll try to locate more facts, but for now it is just a memory of news articles. It wasn't that a few bags would have been bad, but the guy had accumulated too much. Dave
