Best Way to Ship to NGC

    Hello,

Getting ready to have my second grading experience with NGC. First one I dropped at the Long Beach coin show - so no shipping.

I am going to get 3 sets of the 25th ASE Anniversary sets graded.

    My question:

How is the best way to ship to NGC? I thought it said you need to ship Registered, but I am afraid that my sets won't make it there in time for the early release cut off.

UPS will get there but someone says they don't insure coins?

    How about FEDEX?

Any other options (other than drop-off since I am not anywhere near NGC).

    Your advice is appreciated.

Double check with NGC regarding when the coins need to be shipped and received.
Don't use UPS or Fedex (insurance limits or problems)

If you can't use registered mail, use Express Mail with insurance.

Since you're shipping them from CA, I can tell you that my Registered shipments from FL to PCGS in CA have usually taken no more than 8 days to/or from them. Perhaps, you should also ask NGC, if they will accept the "shipping date" on the address label as proof in the event the shipment gets misdirected by USPS.

You cannot send anything other than USPS to a PO Box, so it makes your choice fairly easy. I sent my 5 sets last week via 2-day priority and it ran a little over $70.

I sent mine off last week, and I think they said that the lowest shipping option for registered (possibly the weight was also a reason for this) was USPS Priority, which should get it there in about 5 days or less.

I checked and the cutoff for NGC is Dec 8th, so you should have plenty of time to get them there.

Registered mail. I dont know how many sets you purchased, but the shipping charge will likely be expensive since the box is too big to fit in the largest flat rate. It cost me over $60 to ship it registered.

Registered mail can take anywhere from 1 week to 3 weeks.

I checked my receipt and my package went registered via Priority mail, and made it to Sarasota in 2 days. According to the USPS site, if you are shipping registered, your choices are Priority or First Class (only if under 13 ounces).

It was almost $60 for me to ship them also.

Registered is fine, NGC will go by the shipping date on the mailed package for the early release cut off date.

$60 for shipping registered? I think you were overcharged or you way overinsured. For $60 you could ship a five pound package insured for $21K or a ten pound package insured for $15K. (If they allow flat rate box pricing then you could ship up to 70 pounds insured for $23K) Registered is supposed to cost the postage fee (If over 13 oz it has to be Priority rates) plus the registered fee. Registered fee for $21K is $42.65 which leaves $17 for Priority mailing fees which would ship a five pound package to any location in the country.

Nope, this is about what I paid. Keep in mind you have to keep it in the original mint mailing box who's dimensions are quite a bit larger than had you packaged them yourself. That said, it cost me closer to $70 with insurance. Mailed it on Thursday and it arrived Sat.

Again, it's because of the non-standard sized box. Instead of a cheap flat rate, they're calculating on box dimensions and weight. In comparison, I can ship $10k insured for $40 or so with a medium flat rate.

If I was allowed to repackage it myself, I may have been able to pack it in a large flat rate box, which probably would have cost $30 ($15 rate fee and $15 registered fee).

I only insured it to $2000, since insurance rates are in increments of $1000 anyways.

As long as the weight is under 20 pounds and the length plus girth is less than 84 inches the shipping charge should be strictly by weight. An 84 inch box would be 1 1/2 feet wide by 2 foot long by 1 foot thick. Just how big are these Mint boxes?

If length plus girth is over 84 inches but less than 108 then it's would go as a balloon price 20 pound package. $37.20 postage and you can insure registered up to $5K for $60

If you are going by the Dimensional Weight Price for Low-Density Parcels to Zones 5-8 rates a dimensional weight for the size box I mentioned would be 27 pounds (for me PCGS would be zone 7) A 27 pound package to zone 7 is $52.85 leaving $18 for the registered fees which would insure it to $4K About $70

So the real question is just how big are these mint boxes? (A one foot by one foot by 1.5 foot box would have a dimensional weight of 13 pounds. Priority to zone 7 is $34

The box itself is bigger than the large flat rate box, and weighs 15 lbs. I packaged the box in a slightly larger shipping box that added 2 inches or so to the length and width, and none to the height. I did not want to destroy or deface the mint label on the original box because I was unsure if they'd require that label to be intact. I did not take the time to measure it, since anything registered needs to be handled at a post office counter anyways. It was measured by the clerk.

3 separate members quoted shipping charges $60+. So that's how much it costs to ship the item.

Thanks to all. Bought 2 in one order then changed my mind and bought another 1. That will be a costly decision from the sound of it. thanks to everyone for the help. I am going to get my second box today and will box them together and ship registered. Won't be cheap!
