Obviously, it's a 1999 Cent, which appears double struck, broadstruck, indented, has a split planchet, and just a whole lot going on here... So how would you go about placing a value on something like this?
Personally I wouldn't be able to put a value on it, besides one cent. Sorry, but there's really nothing there as far as a nice looking error goes. good luck with it!!
I can't believe you gave the Op a answer like this. The coin is exactly what the OP says it is and it is a very nice and valuable doublestruck coin.
That's one of the nicest errors I have ever seen. So many problems in one. Worth much more than a cent.
I wouldn't be too harsh on him. It is a lot going on with one cent, and we all have our different tastes. I'm okay with critisism, my feelings aren't that brittle. I do appreciate the kind words.
It wouldn't hurt your retail value any if you got a detailed description on precisely how it happened. I'd take these pics over to the CONECA forum for that. Just the same kind of simple registration process as here, if you're not registered there, as yet. This one will blow their minds, I'm guessing. Anyway, I'm impressed!
I actually registered there last night. I'll take it for a spin over there and see what they may have to say. I'd be interested to find out how so many errors can happen to the same coin. I have a few like this, it would certainly help my understanding of it. I particularly like this one due the a second strike visible along the edge.
I don't know, but perhaps the planchet was defective to begin with and the striking power caused a lot of it???? Definitely an interesting coin, and worth a bit. Don't know how much, though.
I'd call it double strike with an indented second strike. They also used to refer to those as mushroom cents when they split like that. It's a cool error... I'd guess in the $200-$300 range. Single strike mushroom cents trade for $50-$125 or so.
Thanks again folks for the kind words. Mushroom Cent huh? I had never heard of such a thing. Definitely glad I started coming back here, learning a lot just since I came back last week with my quarter/nickel double denom. Good to have somewhere to come and actually learn instead of going to dealers to be told wrong, and getting incorrect advice and values. (Finally found a local dealer I feel I can trust as well.)
I agree with Matt. The cent has a lot going on and is worth getting certified IMO. Beautiful coin and thanks for sharing.
1. This coin is unique. 2. I could see Fred Weinberg listing it as such and getting about $200-$350. 3. It is definitely worth the $25 to get it slabbed/graded (identified!) by ANACS. 4. Please, please keep us updated.
First strike normal, second strike was a broadstrike with an off-center indent. The excessive force caused the planchet to split.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I agree with Matt that the second strike was probably through a blank planchet. The first strike was probably normal in the collar. The high pressure of the indent strike split the coin into the mushroom shape. I personally really like this double struck with indent mushroom cent.
