Tonight a good and long time friend of mine had a few of us over for a little BBQ... I don't remember how the topic came up, but we got on Silver and Coins.... He said, let me get these on the grill and I'll show you my silver coins... So, he brings me this Big jar that full of Zip Lock Bags, one big bag of Wheats, a bag of all Pre 64 Dimes, one of Pre 64 Quarters and one of Half Dollars... I did not look at every single coin, but I know he had atleast 20 -30 coins in each bag of silver... A few of the of the Quarters were from as early as 1890s and 1900s... Unfourtunatly, most of the coins would be a G-VG at best, maybe a few a bit better... I couldn't beleive it as this guy is not really into coins or has never really mentioned it other than saying, yea I gotta few old coins from when the change was actully silver... He said that he got them all when he worked at QT (A local gastation and convienience store, for those withough QT in your area)... I remember, all through High School and a few years after we got out, he worked there and he kept a big plastic cup next to the register and when someone would come in and pay with Silver, he put it in the cup and would add it up at the end of his shif and pay for it out of his pocket... Then after he saw how excited I was about the silver coins, he said, I got something else in the gun safe, tell me what it is or what its worth; my mom asked me to hold them for her after her house got broken into a few times... It was a really big collecters box labeled "US Mint", I don't think it was ever sold by them, but something that Littleton or simmilar put out... Any way, it was a huge box of Proof Sets, it had almost every year from 1962 on up to 1998 and another box with several commems..... I was like HOLY Mother load!!!!! WOW.... He said, Yea I didn't even know she had them, till her house got broken into and she asked me to keep them for her... He said, she has Three of these all the same... He said, he guessed he would get them after she dies.... Then a few of them started asking me what types of coins they could start buying every year and put away... I gave them the USmint.gov and apmex.com web addresses and said check'em out... So all in all, no Super coins worth thousands or no super rarieties, but I thought it was a cool thing to pop up at a BBQ... I would love to add the lot to my collection....
I am the type of person that would have discouraged that friend from becoming a collector and made him an offer for the entire mess. No actually you did right. However, you should have offered to get him a Red Book or told him where to buy one. I usually get about 10 to 15 each year and give to people for gifts.
No, I'm sorry to say the Ribs we a loss... G at best, some were Culls.... Now the home made Peanut Butter Cups!!!! Forget about'em...
