Crooked Monticello On Nickel? Please help!

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by coincollector_9, Nov 12, 2011.

  1. Hello,

A few years back, my grandma gave me this nickel which was cut to look like a cross. About a year ago, I noticed that the Monticello looked crooked when I compared it to another nickel, shown in the picture. It is kind of hard to see since the nickel is cut out, so look how when the cut out coin is turned so the text is straight, the Monticello appears to be tilted.

    Is this an error?

    Thank you.

Its not crooked. The cross was not cut in straight. If you turn the cross so the "OF" is at the same angle as the nickel next to it, you'll see that the monticello is normal.

Even if it had been a rotated die, which it isn't, it would no longer be an error. It would just be a damaged coin.

Also, just wanted to be clear that the Monticello could never be rotated independently of the rest of the design on the same side. It is struck with only one die.
