It actually cost me $20 to stop the check

The reason The Penny Lady posted this thread today and not Wednesday when I cancelled my order is she just found out today that I put a stop on my check. The reason this angered her so much is she had no intention of refunding my $1,700 ... she was going to keep it and issue me a "store credit". So she was MAD that she was out $1,700 that she was counting on and wanted me to buy other coins from her.

It's interesting that she left out the fact that I actually spent nearly $2,000 with her in May for 3 coins. Yes, I am a god-awful, unprofessional, and unethical buyer that spent nearly $2000 with her in May. Right.

The main problem I had with The Penny Lady the first time around after spending nearly $2000 is after cashing my check she delayed shipping my coins for nearly a week, first saying she was leaving town, then when she returned monday said she was too busy to mail them and wouldn't get around to it until the following Thursday ... I had to email her a number of times practically BEGGING her to ship the coins that I bought from her. With most dealers shipping coins is a priority, with The Penny Lady, it's an afterthought to be done at her convenience. If she needed to wait for the check to clear, that's not a problem, but that's not what she told me. It was that she was too busy to mail them.

Then when I told her that I might return one of the three coins that I bought from her for a credit to buy another coin. She completely freaked out demanding that I "Call Her Immediately" ... and when I did she was practically screaming at me on the phone that she had a "HUGE PROBLEM" with me even considering returning a coin for another coin.

In terms of the Photographer incident ... I had no idea what I did was inappropriate ... The Penny Lady told me that she would have the photographer send me photos ... when he sent them by email I replied to Todd asking if I could send him money to compensate him but he refused saying he had already been paid to take them. If The Penny Lady had a problem with this she should have said something at the time and not held in all this anger to have it burst out months later.

In terms of my being unethical and unprofessional, I encourage anyone else to step forward and tell me of my failings in this area. I bought a Capped Bust Half from Illini a few weeks ago ... sent him a check ... he sent me the coin ... it was beautiful. PM him and ask him.

I have actually bought over $20k worth of coins over the past 2 years from hundreds of various of sellers ... many sent me coins on approval ... and i sent back any I did not buy ... i have NEVER, EVER kept a coin I didn't pay for ... I have bought coins from hundreds of different dealers and only The Penny Lady has a problem with me. Interesting.

Sometimes 2 people should just stay away from each other ... and believe me I will.

I dont know what I was thinking when I approached her about buying this Matte Proof. Temporary insanity. I was going to go through with this sale (even though I had bought 2 other Matte Proofs in the past month -- duplication is a non issue for me) and simply put the coin up for auction on ebay if I didnt like it in hand, however I knew I would lose about $1000 on that transaction.

So anyway on Tuesday when she emailed me that she got my check, she told me that she wasnt going to ship my coins but instead would bring them to a coin show in 2 weeks where I could pick them up (great, more shipping issues). Anyway after she pulled this shipping thing for a 2nd time, I had had it, and emailed her that I was cancelling my order.

I dont know why shipping coins is such a problem for Charmy. Everytime I buy something, there is some sort of long delay with shipping coins (or no shipping)

There are hundreds of great dealers out there that not only ship promtply but will let you examine a coin in hand before deciding if you want to keep it. With The Penny Lady ... once you spend a penny with her, the money is hers and if you don't like the coin in hand you better find something else in her small inventory you want to buy. Most other professional coin dealers realize that you really can't tell about a coin from a single photo and allow in-hand examination to make a final decision.

One thing I am guilty of here ... Insanity ... for keeping The Penny Lady's website on my radar for 6 months.

The fact that The Penny Lady not only posted this thread ... but posted it on THREE (3) boards ... "for feedback and comments" ... telling people to PM her for my name ... and giving others that didn't PM her just enough information for people to figure it out ... says more about her character, ethics, and professionalism than I could ever write.

Winged Liberty, thank you for posting your side of the story. I am sorry for making any kind of comment without hearing 'the other side of the story'. In the end, usually it seems, most problems are better solved by people facing each other rather than round-abouts.

    Respectfully
    Lucy

Seems to me that this was the problem in the first place. "Mr. H" was not being forthright in his dealings or communications with Charmy. Now, he not only renegged on his deal with her but he wants to blacklist her because she brought this issue to everybody's attention?

Sorry, I can't support that regardless of his excuses. As far as I'm concerned, you could keep your $20,000 in purchases since money doesn't buy respect.
    Respect buys respect.

The following occurs: to make a comment in direct relation to the initial post and, at a same time, to avoid a lack of respect towards The Penny Lady™ or WingedLiberty, would be something quite delicate to achieve.

Paul, wow, now that you've been outed, you finally decide to communicate and explain your actions. I don't like having to take things like this public, but it has been your actions that brought this about.

I am not angry that I don't get to keep your $1,700 - that doesn't bother me at all because now I don't have to deal with you any longer. What angered me is that you cancelled your order AGAIN and then didn't even have the guts to call me or explain your cancelling an order for the third time. I received and deposited your check on Monday, and sent you an email on Tuesday that I would bring your coin to Baltimore next week - NOT TWO WEEKS. On Wednesday you sent me an email cancelling the order without any explaination whatsoever. Then Thursday I found out you stopped payment on your check.

I asked you to call me to discuss it, but I never heard from you, then I see you purchased another very similar coin over the weekend. It is clear that you cancelled the coin you purchased from me because you bought another very similar coin from someone else - not because I wouldn't "ship" the coin instead of hand carry it to you.

You examined huge photos of my coin, agreed to buy it, then cancelled it, then months later bought it again, then cancelled it again! As I said, it was my bad that I continued doing business with you.

Regarding my return policy - which is clearly stated on my website and which you were well aware of - I take any returns on coins but issue credit but again - YOU KNEW THAT before you ever decided to purchase any coins from me, so why do you now claim foul! I asked you three ties to explain why you kept cancelling the coins you wanted to purchase, but you ignored me and refused to explain and just suddenly stopped payment on your check. As I mentioned, the Baltimore show is NEXT week, not TWO weeks away and bringing the coin to you personally rather than shipping it by registered mail would actually get to you SOONER.

Also, you, and most everyone I do business with, knows that I travel to shows almost every week, so shipping coins can be delayed due to my travel schedule, NOT MY CONVENIENCE. Unless I am out of town, I ship coins within 1-2 days of receipt of a check. I communicate often and clearly with everyone and let my customers know exacly when I am shipping their items.

By the way, Paul, I don't "freak out" but the very few times I have had to deal with someone as problematic as you does cause me a great deal of frustration because I truly love this business but I don't like having to deal with such extremely fickle and unprofessional people who treat me like a dormat. I am just grateful that people like you are far and few between.

So now at least we all have heard your side and can hopefully agree that we need not cross paths again.

I think losing each others phone number and blocking each others email is the best solution.

This is a matter that should have been taken care of between the two parties. I see no evidence on the part of WL that would be construed as unethical or unprofessional. People, as shoppers, are always returning goods. It happens all the time. As far as unprofessional, is WL, as a prospective buyer from a professional dealer considered a professional buyer? That's a new one.

Now that both sides have said their peace, can the mods simply lock this thread? They have both spoken, agree to disagree, and have parted ways.

    Nothing to see here.

Before it's locked, I think there is one thing that becomes clear after both sides have had their chance.

People are not psychic. If someone had a problem the first time, it can usually be fixed the next time around if you speak up about it. And if the problem is major enough to turn you off the first time, why return? I just can't sensibly understand the whole thing with buying and canceling on the same coin twice, both times having the same concerns in mind. It's something that defies logic and serves as a testament to one's character.

The thing I love about the coin world is that it's not like, say... walking into a fancy electronics store and buying a new tv. Here business goes hand in hand with a long term relationship between the two parties. That is just the nature of it when collectors for certain types of coins find dealers who specialize in those coins.
In any long term dealings there will be an occasional issue. This relationship thrives because people are able to talk it out and find an amiable solution. When you act without communicating the problem, professionalism goes out the window. When you do that double buy/cancel thing, ethics becomes irrelevant.

Aw man! You shouldnt have said anything. The guessing, finger pointing and watching the mob turn on themselves was getting to be entertaining.

Well anyway, it's a shame this turned out the way it did.

Okay. I thought it was very funny. But can someone explain to me the very last line? I'm embarrassed to ask, and admit ignorance.

Very well put. When I was in Viet Nam, I happened to meet some men who's word was as solid as could be. If they didn't do what they said, it was because they were no longer with us. I greatly admired these guys and have always tried to imitate them. The problem arises when you begin to expect others to be trying to do the same thing. Honor, or rather, honorable people seem to be getting scarcer ? Perhaps it only seems that way because of my locale, but everyone here has an "angle". What kind of society must teach ethics in colleges ?

    Just sayin'

Yes and I would further state that this public thread is very unethical and unprofessional and should have been handled on the private scale between you and WL.
