Silly me, I bought via eBay a roll of what was advertised as yr2000 "P" Sacageweas. They arrived today while I was at work. My wife called me to say that both ends of the roll show the reverse of the coins. Is this odd? shouldn't mint rolled coins all be lined up with faces one way and tails the other? How can I know I got what I payed for without damaging the roll other wise. Is this a sign I got took?
The only reason I have got these coins is to replace a roll that belongs to a friend. My delinquent son opened their roll and snatched two of their coins.
Thanks in advance to any replies.

I have bought quite a few rolls from the mint directly & they come every which way , heads/heads, tails/heads ,tails/tails.... There isn't any rhyme or reason to the way they package mint rolls-
There is no real way though to tell if they have been gone thru , I can open a rolled end look at the coins and put them back in re-roll the ends and no one could probably tell. Most folks I dont think do that but you never can tell.
Check the sellers feedback - but I think your OK and most likley didnt get taken.

Your "mint roll" was actually wrapped by a contractor, not Mint employees. A canvas bag full of thousands coins was dumped into a hopper, which fed them into tubes with pre-formed rolls in them. When they were filled, the other roll end was crimped by the machinery.

The first coin, after tumbling about, had a 50-50 chance of going into the roll head first. The last one had that same probability. Combine those numbers, and for each roll there is a 25% chance of two heads, a 25% chance of two tails, and a 50% chance of one of each..

That's why one-quarter of all the rolls have two reverses showing, and can't be confirmed without opening the roll. This is true whether it's the Mint's contractors, one of the armored transport companies which roll the great majority of the coins delivered to banks and retailers, or one of the large banks which rolls its own. :D

If you do the math, for a 25-coin roll, there is only one chance in 33,554,432 that this will occur.

    Thanks Fellows.

You've eased my mind considerable. Now, how did my seller know that the coins in question where in fact Philadelphia mint? Never mind, I'll ask them directly.

Depends on what wrapper they were in - if they were in a US Mint wrapper it would say right on the wrapper what the mint was. If they were not, then I would have to assume the seller had removed the coins from the roll and re-rolled them.

when the coins first came out in 2000 i went to the bank and got several rolls with the us mint wrapping on them none of these had the mint mark on them (they were all D's). the only ones that i have with the mint mark on them were the ones that i got drirectly from the mint in roll sets or from other sources selling mint wrapped rolls.

If you got the rolls at a bank the wrapper would not have the mint mark indicated since they were not sold by the mint.

im sorry for the confushion that was the point i was trying to make, the rolls i have are wrapping in the same wrraping that the mint uses for there roll sets just no mint mark. i was suggesting that hideouse,s purchase was possibly from some one who had purchased the roll they bought at a bank in 2000.

Many Dealers purchase rolls of State Quarters and Sacagawea Dollars by the box and of one Date and Mint mark! Therefore, he or she should know which box the roll came from and probably noted "2000-P" on the outside of the roll. There is a slim chance that the company that rolled the coins which were probably received by them in $1,000 or $5,000 bags, could have inadvertently placed a roll with another Date and Mint mark in the box by accident but that is highly unlikely.

That may not be true. Back in 2000 in order to try and make it easier to get the new dollars into circulation they not only supplied the coins directly to Wal-Mart but they also allowed banks to order boxes of the new dollars directly from the Mint and bypass the Federal Reserve. Those rolls provided to the bank were in the exact same roll wrappers as the ones the Mint sold directly to collectors.

does anyone know when the mint started to sell sac's in the mint wrapped rolls as sets with the P and D marks?
did the mint sell sac rolls in 2001? and did they sell them in the sets with the P and D mint marks?

They may have allowed it, but you have to wonder if any of the banks actually did it. Especially since the banks didn't want the coins to begin with.

The mint started the Sackies in P & D rolls in 2000 and have ever since.

well you can stop wondering, the bank that i got my 2000 sac rolls from, did get them from the mint with the mint wrapping ( black yellow with the picture of sacagawea on it.) tried to get them the next year for 2001 but they only had 2000, that ended my collecting untill i got hooked at the end of 2003 were i proceeded to get taken by several shady internet dealers. knowledge can be expensive when not properly researched.
