With the recent spike in the fake silver coins and silver made in China, I was wondering where I can go and actually handle a piece? I would actually like to get my hands on a coin or two just to educate myself on how to tell fakes. Does anyone know where to get them without actually paying what the REAL coin would cost?
Well, eBay is probably your best bet, listed under the "replicas and reproductions" category. Many are available for only a few dollars with free shipping. However, if you want 90% silver coins, be prepared to pay about thirty percent over melt for most "Chinese fakes". If you want replica coins to study, I would recommend the less expensive "base" metal variety. The coins are virtually identical to the silver versions, as the same dies are used to produce them.
Yes, the Ebay replica section has a lot, and when you get them they will not have the copy or replica stamp on them. You can get the cast ones for a few bucks. For the ones that are stuck, they are a higher grade and sell for around $50. These are the ones that are claiming to be 90% silver. I say claiming because many are not. I bought one from the J-man, before he was Naru'd and the coin came in 2/10th light, and did not pass the silver ring test. Imagine that, getting hosed from a Chinese counterfeiter. Would would have thunk that Also, there are many on this board who do not believe you should buy counterfeit coins under any circumstances, for various reasons, but like you, I just wanted to learn and protect my self and I can tell you that I have learned a ton.
