Hello, I have no idea what this is and hope that someone here can help identify this coin. It is 5.5gr It appears that there are some markings, but I can't make out what anything says. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
At a glance, it appears to be a fake Spanish gold coin, probably a representation of a 2 escudos piece. Real ones were, believe it or not, much cruder.
Agreed. It appears to be of that period but the workmanship is too "good". These coins were never really meant to be coins, they were struck really to provide a unit of account, and were shipped back to Spain for remelting usually.
Thank you for the info. Any specific ways to tell with complete certainty that it is a fake, other than the quality being too "good"? If it helps, it is NOT magnetic at all. As long as it wouldn't hurt the value, I can do an acid test to see if it is gold. (scratching and testing on a stone, not pouring acid directly on the coin) thanks again for the help guys!
It's a modern novelty interpretation of the coin. I have the same ones, 2 and 4 escudos that are virtually identical to the one you posted. Its the correct size, but underweight at 5.5. These whould be at least a gram heavier in that condition. The difference is due to less dense and thus lighter weight materials making up the coin. If you want the two I have they are yours as a gift.
