Ok.. Only coins with a shot at 67 go in. This isn't all of them, a few more in SDB that I'll either add to this thread or create another for. I have 8 candidates here, 2 of which I'm 98% sure I won't send because I'm not sure they have a shot at "at least" 67.. and one other that I'm 99% sure won't. The other 5 are up in the air, with only 3 that I feel should be 67 or better. Gonna do this all at once within this thread vs. creating 8 different threads... Let me know what you think of each.. a simple yes./no for each will work, but if you can offer comment that would always be appreciated. First four are out of a mint set.. I think 2 of these have honest shots at 67, with one being a lock in my mind at least.
Next four are from here and there,, the pretty blue rimmed toner is going in regardless,, love the eye appeal which is even better in hand. hard to capture luster in diffuesed light,, stuck one shot of a coin in there under direct light to give you an idea of how the coin looks in good light vs. diffused. diffused shows detail much better, so you have to use your imagination a bit w.r.t. luster....
Here are the only ones I'm really considering, and will likely drop the dime. My opine on each. The dime should be easily 67, no visible hits anywhere that I can see,, but if you look at the population report for that year you see that the dime was apparently the best thing going as high grades are common... plus it's a rosy.. yawn. The half is too nicked up to get a 67. The quarter has a lot of chatter not visible in the pic, and soft detail in the hair, unsure if that matters. The 49 cent lacks obverse luster for 67, but detail may earn it a 66, but could also go 65. 69S, dunno, obverse looks like a cameo, strong eye appeal, but minor chatter could hold it back,, luster is there. 70S, looks proof also, fields are nice but hit on reverse could hold it back. Also has some chatter here and there... plenty of luster. 68S, hit on cheek may do it it... fields are glass, luster is there.. nice cent. I'd hope an easy 66. 52 just doesn't have the luster pop, but does have plenty to get a 66 is they can get past the nics around the face (noes, eye, cheek),, probably a 65, but the blue frame around the rim is striking... this is the only one I'm set on sending in,, not for a big grade, but for getting this eye candy into a safe environment. Here are a few more pics of the remaining candidates..
I predict you will strike out. In my eyes, the best chance is the 68-s cent, but the die is severely eroded which might hold it back. The dime is a close second, depending on in-hand luster. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to being wrong.
The weak strike on the 52, as evidenced by the annealing marks on the shoulder, and the chatter in the face and the reverse will more than likely get a 64. The weak strike on the 68S Lincoln, as indicated by the annealing marks on the should, and the rim damage above GOD and T would preclude any grade higher than a 65 IMO. The 70-S "could" get bagged due to what appears to be roller marks on the lower left shoulder. If not then the chatter on all the high points should get the coin a 64. The 69-S is just too plagued with chatter dings to get anything higher than a 64 IMO. While all of the coins look nice, they're simply not high grade coins. Nice uncirculated at best. Be sure to post the results should you decide to submit these.
Thanks for the replies guys, I agree with you. Back into the book they go, just not nice enough to waist the $ slabbing. I may still put the 52 in a tomb, but need to dig up a few more good coins to send with it. Maybe a few mid.grade key dates will accompany it. I'll post another batch of potential candidates when I get them together.. and again, thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for posting, sorry to see you are having to shelf them. I think I learned a bit from this post.
Good luck with your submissions! It took me 20+ original bank rolls to fish out 1 MS67 and 2 MS66's. I don't know if I would have had better luck with NGC on these 3 submissions but PCGS was awfully tough on my submissions. Frankly, I thought this one below deserved an MS68 but given top-pop for this year is 67, I'm thinking it would have taken an act of God to pull a 68.
