I have a 1943-P steel penny that is in excellent condition, but it is missing the four. Is this because of wear or is it a mint error? I've only seen 1943-S cent missing a 4. Thank you.

Sounds interesting. If you post a picture, we will be able to try & help identify the coin.

Since an error like this hasn't ever been verified, our first guesses will be either it was a greased filled die, or someone did it to the coin after it left the mint. This is more common than you think, but please post a photo and we can give you better feedback.

I found one of these a few months back and it was due to a grease filled die, as medoraman mentioned.

very common, especially on steel cents.

    The cause?
    Greased die.
