i have a coin that was interested in finding some information about before trying to sell it. I have a 1887 morgan silver dollar and after doing research found that sound coins from the time period have numbers barely visable above the o in dollar. After taking a close look my coin appears to have a 6 above the o in dollar and also has a rainbow effect on both sides. Does anyone know about this coin and what grade it is and how much I could be looking at getting if i sell it?
Other then a Vam 1887/6 O I know not what you speak of. And from that picture I could not tell you what you would get as I can't tell the grade but it looks to possibly be AT (artificially toned).
What is your source for that information? I have collected coins since 1964 and I have never heard any such thing before. Like Duke K, I think your coin's toning looks like AT. By the way, welcome to Coin Talk.
Ok, so i was looking to closley and it is just a 6 but if the coins color is real like i know it is what is ur quess its worth
Is there a chance the "6" you speak of above the "O" in "DOLLAR" is really a small "s" as there were 1887 Dollars made in SF and they have an S there to so indicate. Otherwise, I also do not know of any such Morgans. Welcome to the Forum, we aren't bad, so hang around. Jim
The images are too blurry to tell much about the coin, although it does not appear to have a mintmark. Just a guess, but the 6 above the 0 in dollar could be anything from the viewer's imagination to a dropped number (a form of strike-through error). No idea whether the latter will being any significant premium. Agreed on the artificial toning; that kind of toning pattern should only be on one side (and the reverse looks odd in any event).
