Signatures. Hey all, This may be a silly idea for a thread, but I figured what the heck Just a curious question here, but are there any signatures, or signature combo's on either modern, or older notes that really catch your eye? You know, for some reason you really like the way they look, and they add to your appeal of a particular note? Some of my fav combo's are: Series 1988A/1990: Villalpando/Brady. Series 1993: Withrow/Bentsen. Series 2001: Marin/O'Neill. Series 2003: Marin/Snow Series 2009: Rios/Geithner. I also really like some sig's on older series as well, such as: WH Woodin, John W. Snyder, David M. Kennedy, George W. Miller, George P. Schultz, Georgia Neese Clark, Ivy Baker Priest, and Romana Acosta Bañuelos, just to name a few. Post your favorite sig's or sig combo's here! -J.
I've always liked the signature on the right of this note from French Indochina: His name is René Thion de la Chaume, not that you could read it Dave
That is a pretty wild sig! I like it! Thanks for posting, Dave. Also, just to add, obviously I included signers of US currency in my original post, because that is where my main interests lie.....but please, post any sig's you like, from any note in the world. The more, the merrier!
As common and known as they may be; Marry Ellen Withrow and Rubin (Series 1995 & 1996) would definitely be my favorites. I specifically like their signatues because so much history is behind them including the Series 1996 first major design change in 68 years! I also appreciate Marry Ellen Withrow as a person because she was in fact known as one of the most publically generous treasurers of history. She apparently signed more currency for people than any other treasurer. That is just what I heard from some one though so I don't know for sure. I like how its also one of the few years where for the $20, the series years were back to back with the same signatures but different design, Series 1995 $20 and Series 1996 (redesigned big head) with same signature combo. -Trav
Well if our current treasurer used her husbands last name instead of hers it would be Gumataotao/Geithner.
I've always been fond of the 1988A/1990 signatures, I love seeing those distinct double Vs in the signature. I'm also fond of those 1985 James Baker notes and perhaps a few other series. The signatures that I can't stand the most are with the 2009s. I was really looking forward to the 2009s as I thought the middle name in Rosa Gumataotao Rios was going to look so cool. The font on Rios's signature is way too small (presumably to save space) which makes it hard to read and Geithner's signature looks like chicken scratch. What a shame.
:too-funny: Yeah, I get that a lot, whenever I tell people I like the '09 sig's. I guess I'm in the minority. Oh well. Don't know why I like them, I just do.
Currently I have 26 courtesy autographs of either the Treasurer or Secretary or both, but my favorite is from an engraver. I hope to get several more.
Steve, I think this thread was meant for more along the lines of what your favorite signature combo is just on regular currency, such as Series 2006 or Series 1996 signatures or Series 2009 or even Treasurer signatures on foreign currency. For an instance, my favorite is the series 1995/1996 signature combo including Withrow/Rubin.
I like the Series 1969 signatures. Dorothy Andrews Elston was appointed Treasurer of the United States by President Richard M. Nixon on 08 May 1969. She married Walter Kabis in 1970 and changed her name to Dorothy Andrews Elston Kabis. She became the first (and so far) only treasurer to have their name changed while in office, an event significant given that the signature of both the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury appear on paper denominations of U.S. currency. The resulting change in Kabis' signature appeared first on the Series 1969A $1 Federal Reserve Note, along with the signature of Secretary David M. Kennedy. All other denominations had Kabis' new signature along with Secretary John Connally's signature on Series 1969B. When John Connally was Governor of Texas in 1963, Connally was a passenger in the car in which President Kennedy was assassinated, and he was seriously wounded in the shooting, but he survived despite his injuries. Dorothy Andrews Elston Kabis died of a heart attack in Sheffield, Massachusetts on 03 July 1971 at the age of 54. Romana A. Bañuelos, was subsequently appointed Treasurer of the United States. The story of Romana A. Bañuelos is very interesting! I have more details here: http://www.panix.com/~clay/currency/1969-signatures.html
I remember you telling this story a while back but I never could find it again thanks for reposting! That is so neat. So much history behind the 1969 notes! They actually are cool looking too.
Treasurers of the United States are very interesting. In addition to the information previously posted: William Alexander (W.A.) Julian - Last male Treasurer of the United States Georgia Neese Clark - First female Treasurer of the United States Ivy Baker Priest - Mother of Pat Priest who played Marilyn, Herman Munster's wife, on the television show, The Munsters. A great quote from Ivy Baker Priest is, “We women don't care too much about getting our pictures on money as long as we can get our hands on it.” Azie Taylor Morton - First African-American Treasurer of the United States Angela M. Buchanan - Youngest Treasurer of the United States. She was 32 years old when she was appointed Treasurer. She is Pat Buchanan's sister (Pat Buchanan ran three unsuccessful campaigns for President of the United States) Catalina Vásquez Villalpando - Only Treasurer ever sent to prison. She received a four month prison sentence, probation, a fine, and community service for conspiring to withhold information from the federal government and the United States Senate. She pleaded guilty to obstruction and tax evasion and assisted the government in its further investigation of corruption related to her case in return for the light sentence. She resigned on 19 March 1993, and the post of the Treasurer of the United States became vacant for almost one year. As a consequence, Series 1988 A proved to be a very extended issue. Mary Ellen Withrow - Elected Treasurer of Marion County, Ohio in 1976 and 1980. She was elected Treasurer of the State of Ohio for three terms beginning in 1982. She was appointed Treasurer of the United States by President Bill Clinton in 1994. She is the only person in United States history to have held the post of treasurer at all three levels of government — local, state and national levels.
Ooooohhh I haven't been fishing in FOREVER. Where are we going? Count me in! There aren't any fish around where I live that don't taste like nasty sewer, yuck.
Oh cool. We'll just use whats in your profile picture to go "fly fishing". Seriously, I wish I could join you. Fish is my favorite meat in the world (yes, I consider it a meat) and I absolutely love fishing. Good luck. Maybe you can PM me with your finishing results? Nice to meet you, green, my name is Travis.
Glad to meet you Travis, and I'm not really a fly fisherman, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn....... I do, however, pass by Roscoe NY quite often and there's always somebody out there in the BeaverKill donning waders and a rod.
