If you collect US Modern Commemorative coins including the State Quarters you should know her. From 2000 until her retirement in 2006, she served as a sculptor-engraver at the United States Mint at Philadelphia. In fact among some of the State Quarters she designed are the reverses of the 2007 Idaho, Montana and Wyoming pieces. Take a look at her artistry on these Quarters (coinpage.com photos): 2007 Idaho State Quarter: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-7573.html 2007 Montana State Quarter: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-7569.html 2007 Wyoming State Quarter: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-7575.html The following First Spouse Gold $10 designs are credited to her abilities (coinpage.com photos): Reverse 2008 First Spouse (Elizabeth Monroe): http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-7296.html Reverse 2009 First Spouse (Anna Harrison): http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-8049.html 2010 First Spouse (Jane Pierce): OBVERSE: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-8860.html REVERSE: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-8861.html Obverse 2011 First Spouse (Julia Grant): http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/firstSpouse/?action=2011fs&spouse=juliaGrant And here are some Modern US commemoratives bearing her artistry: Reverse 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative Clad: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-7338.html Obverse 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-8832.html Obverse 2011 Chickashaw National Recreation Area Quarter: http://americabeautifulquarters.com/chickasaw-america-the-beautiful-quarter/ Obverse 2011 U. Her state quarter designs look a little as if she considered these to be below her dignity. The other designs - and that includes the Chickasaw quarter - are better in my opinion. Christian
Don't know if it's below her dignity, to me the designs are less than what I would like (considering some of the other state designs) and seems like they were just dashed off without too much thought. For example, the cowboy on the Wyoming one is the SAME as on the Wyoming state license plates. You can hardly call throwing this item on the reverse of a coin and pairing it with the state motto some kind of artistic design. IMO any 4th grader could have done that. The peregrine falcon on the Idaho quarter is ok, but there are many other things Idaho is known for that could have better represented the state, and finally Montana's buffalo skull could have been much better. Why a dried out skull? There is no "life" to that, and kind of represents Montana as some barren land. Montana is (as is Idaho and Wyoming) a vastly beautiful state that has so much more to offer as it's representation than an old buffalo skull. Looks to me as if she just put no thought into it. Addendum: her Jane Pierce is quite well done and very nice.
I thought there was public input into the choice of quarter designs ? I know we were asked here in Nevada for input. Maybe she had other designs that were rejected ? Sometimes artists have conceptions that are not used. Just sayin' gary
