If I am investing in coins for both the love of coin collecting & investment, & passing on both to grandchild, which is better for my purpose; Proof silver dollars from the U.S. mint for their beauty or slabbed coins for their history & value. I guess what I am asking is will the proofs be worth more in the years to come if she needs to sell them, or the slabbed coins? I really hope that she never comes to that point & becomes in love with collecting, but who knows what the future holds. We have already started a savings account with automatic deposits every month of $50, & as she is only 5 weeks old, by the time she turns 18, she should have quite a little nest egg.

This question isn't one that can be answered.....no one knows what coins will go up in value and what one won't.....we don't know if the market will be up or down.
In other words, I would buy coins that you like....I'm sure if you like them she will like them too.
The problem with saying that the proof coins will go up is that....is that mintage/grade/demand/and such all go into the value and market of the coin....if the mint minted 100,000 and only 75,000 collectors want the coin then the price might not be too hot....but if there are 125,000 collectors wanting the coin then the price hits the moon!
The coin market is risky to invest in....
You can get Proof coins slabbed....so that isn't a problem....also slabbing doesn't add to the coins history or value....any coin can be slabbed.

I also have a little boy/girl coming into the world late this year (I'm the uncle) and what I might do is either get a proof set for it during the next few years or work on a set of American Silver Eagle's.....
I would suggest looking around and finding coins you like....research the coin to make sure you won't be cheated--and keep on here asking questions and helping us guys with our questions!!!

I hope this helps....this is one of those questions that doesn't have an end.
