Had a great time at my first coinshow

    I was a little nervous about my first coin show, but it was a great experience. I ended up going to a show in Vienna Virginia, and there were about 40 tables setup. Everyone was courteous and helpful. An experienced dealer in gold coins even took a look at my 3 dollar 1855 gold piece that I found in my grandpas collection. I was happy to learn that it was genuine. Overall I left with 4 barber quarters (vf-xf), an 1807 drapped bust half (g-vg), and a 2011 silver eagle. I also left with a book on barber quarters, and some money left over. My wife also had a great time, although she didn't end up buying anything. Looking forward to the next show. I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

    Sounds like you had a good time! I'm going to my first this December, I hope I have a similar experience!

    Glad to hear that your first show was a good one! I would definitely consider sending in your 3 dollar gold piece in to be slabbed, that way it will confirm authenticity and keep it protected. Plus depending on the grade it could be worth a lot of money!

    Thanks. The 3 dollar I plan to send in, but I'm not sure about PCGS or ANACS. I was told it had AU detail, but was lightly cleaned. It also has a slight rim bump. On top of that it has been lightly cleaned. The guy said that all things considered it was worth around 700 wholesale. If I send it into PCGS does it come back as genuine? Thanks

    I'd send into NGC, they give an grade but call it "Details", like "XF-45, Details".

    Details being similar to Genuine only it gives an estimated grade.

    I think that PCGS now does that too if you opt into it. I saw it on their website.

    Hey JCB, I was there yesterday and today. I spent way more than intended though. I couldn't resist :)

    PCGS doesn't do "details." I just sent in a purple-ish Morgan and all I got back was "genuine."

    Here is the announcement on PCGS.com

    [h=4]PCGS Expands Genuine Service Offerings[/h]
    PCGS is proud to announce our new expanded Genuine program. At no cost to you, we are now offering three Genuine service options for collectors to choose from. The three options include: 1) Standard Genuine service (default); 2) Genuine with Details; or the 3) Do not holder Genuine-only coins. The Genuine with Details option will print the coin problem as well as a details grade (we will not be using numeric grades). An example of Genuine Details would be “Cleaned – XF Details.”

    That's awesome Cookey. I knew right when I walked in the doors, it was going to be a good time.

    Wow, that's really new. I just got that Morgan back a couple months ago. "Details" wasn't an option. Good to know.

    JCB, there's a show up at the Annandale NOVA Campus December 10-11. Just in case you didn't already know.

    I think you have to specify what genuine option you want to use for this new service, it's not automatic for the details, just in case you want to use it.
