    And

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c112:1:./temp/~c112mX1zOe::

I don't know if it's been signed by the President. I've written him asking him to sign the bill.

This bill, would authorize the U.S. Mint to produce $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half-dollar clad coins in 2015 to recognize and celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

This is very disturbing. Whatever happened to the good old days when commemoratives used to center around dead politicians and war? Just kidding. I might actually have to buy 1 of these.

I would like to see Commemorative coins to commemorate the Baseball Hall of Fame but why 2015? What event will the coins commemorate that happened in 1940? The Baseball Hall of Fame admitted their first inductees in 1936 and the Baseball Hall of Fame building was dedicated in 1939. It seems to me that these coins will come a few years too late to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame (but I will still be glad to see them).

Maybe it will be like the Korean War coin that celebrated 38 years....mint never makes sense.
Ok, I actually counted the years, so it would be 75 years in 2015 if you counted 1 year with 1940. so I guess they count physical years then.

There is a Baseball commemorative already.
Sorry got the wrong image but still like my idea better than their in this case. Guess I should of just said I do not think this is good idea for a comm coin.

I think we need one to commemorate Apple Pie.....

The coin you posted commemorates basketball for the Atlanta Olympics. Yes, there was also a baseball commemorative coin for the Atlanta Olympics but the proposed commemorative coins in the OP would commemorate the Baseball Hall of Fame, not the game of baseball or an Olympic sport.

How about a gold coin commemorating Ft. Knox? They could make the blanks right there.

I am always a little put off by this kind of choice for coins - a commemorative coin to commemorate the anniversary of a commemorative institution? Seems a little redundant to me.

The problem is the Mint is limited to, I think, 2 new commems per year to curve the flood of commems that occurred in the past. So, influential organizations lobby for their commem well into the future.

Will Pete Rose be on the coin?

Don't forget the hot dogs and Chevrolet!

Of course baseball can have and should have a commem. Since the late 19th century it's been as much a part of and interwoven in our culture as anything else they have commemorated.
Now the question is what will the design entail. My guess is it'll be nothing more than the hall of fame building. After the boy scout commem it sure wouldn't surprise me however that they will find a way to put one of the players from A League of Their Own on it.:(

I hope that they make sure and include the following on the coin....a Caucasion, an African-American, a Hispanic and a woman (They had a league back in the 40s or something right? "There's no crying is baseball").

Sorry, I'm still bitter about the stupid politically correct obverse of the boy scout commemorative.

The bill has passed the House ONLY. It has been sent to the Senate and has been referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. So it still has a way to go before it can go to the President for his signature. It may never get there. Or it may fast track because given a choice between actually working on and solving our countries financial problems, or passing inconsequential feel good bills with little political fallout, it is obvious which ones they would rather concentrate on.

    You're right, Conder.
Here is the text of the bill: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/C?c112:./temp/~c1120vOjPx

I also like this section of the bill:
    (d) Sense of Congress- It is the sense of Congress that, to the extent possible without significantly adding to the purchase price of the coins, the $1 coins and $5 coins minted under this Act should be produced in a fashion similar to the 2009 International Year of Astronomy coins issued by Monnaie de Paris, the French Mint, so that the reverse of the coin is convex to more closely resemble a baseball and the obverse concave, providing a more dramatic display of the obverse design chosen pursuant to section 4(c).

The U.S. Mint will not issue a Pete Rose coin....BUT Daniel Carr will......:D

The thing I like about these is you can get 9 coins and have a team. After 10-12 years of issues there should be enough HoF coins that we could trade 'em just like real teams do. HoF coins honoring pitchers could get STRIKE THREE labels instead of FIRST STRIKE labels..........

    GEHGRIG - SP? - GIBSON

    MANTLE - BROCK

When I first saw the bill I felt a weird feeling about it. I did not like the idea of baseball players on coins. I was thinking about it and it just doesn't feel right, why not put someone who deserves to be on the coin? I also am not a huge fan of baseball and don't care for the idea of baseball coins. I was thinking though, that if I was the president and I did get the bill, I would pass it, as I would hate to see any bill about coins get turned down.

It's to commemorate the Baseball Hall of Fame, not individual players!
