Can someone help me identify this old coin. There are some letters visible (...D...ACH...) but not enough for me to make sense of what this coin is. The middle looks like it might be an elk? On the reverse side it looks like it may be a bird standing, but it is only a wild guess. Any ideas?
I would love to help on this one, it looks fascinating, my kind of mystery. Though your pics are pretty good, I just can't see the details I would need to ID.
My first inclination seeing the image on the left and the details in the center is that this is not a coin but an old button and that is the remains of the shank.
I have one also and give up on it. Yours was better to view than mine and now i can see it is a button. Great call Lotsofcoppers now my eyes can rest.
Not sure if it is really a button. I cannot see the back as the remains of a shank. Does anybody have a picture of a similar button in better condition or can tell me what the text should read?
There are a large number of different backmarks on buttons so in its present state it would be hard to find a match. I metal detect and have found a few buttons that appear to be coins. That is just my first thought on your piece. Have you used a loupe to try to figure out more of the letters? Here is a recent thread that from this board that shows a button disguising itself as a coin http://www.cointalk.com/t191379/
I think I can vaguely make out the following letters but with no certainty: at the top "REWAY.D " , at the bottom "... ACR…C ". (dots represent missing letters/space) Any clue from you detectives out there? I'd love to find out if it is from a merchant or some type of uniform.
