I am now working on my BU Kennedy Half set and I found a 1964 Kennedy for sale online that has a lot of toning to it. I am wondering it it is natural or artifical. I don't have a lot of experience with toned coins but there is a lot of color to this one and something just doesn't look right to me. The colors look a lot stronger than on most toned coins I have seen and that concerns me. What do you guys think? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8416797010&fromMakeTrack=true
It looks artifical (sulfur shampoo or match-heads in a 500 degree oven) to me. The other auction listed is for toned halves as well. Bone
I am no expert on natural vs. artificially toned coins but here is my thought. You said you are working on your BU Kennedy set. Unless you know what you are looking for when it comes to toning ( which you have stated you do not ) then stay away from them all together. You might be putting your money in the toilet. Stay with the nice non-toned coins. There are many to be found. Go for the best you can afford. You'll be glad later on. If you are looking on Ebay be patient , there are good deals to be had. Keep a record of the coins you are looking for and what they sold for and then wait, sooner or later you'll get a deal. Patience , patience , patience.
Thats basically what I am doing, but I saw this one and wondered if it looked real. I have no toned coins in my collection so I thought one would make a nice addition, but I don't really care. To be honest, I try and not buy coins more than $20 or $25 on eBay (unless it is a PCGS or NGC coin) because I don't like to spend more than that on something that is not in hand. But, for a BU Kennedy set, thats not going to be an issue in most cases since they don't have that value. I was just curious about this coin. I would prefer to have a 1964 proof Kennedy with some cameo features rather than a toned coin anyway...which is what I am looking for.
Here is one from a seller I have gotten coin from...I think I could trust him pertty good. http://cgi.ebay.com/1964-KENNEDY-50...415279206QQcategoryZ41103QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem He has some great coins right now....a RED Large cent is something to behold!!! Speedy
I think I'm going to stick to untonned coins for this set. Thats what I originally wanted to do and I'm not going to alter my plan. I think down the road I will find a nice graded toned coin to go with it, but for now I'm going to try and complete it untonned. I think the nice thing that I'll do for this set it make sure all the proof coins (including the 3 SMS coins) have a cameo finish.
