Can anyone help me pin down what this coin is? It is about 7.9g and 30mm. I've been searching the Ferdinand & Isabella coins but haven't been able to find an exact match and the date on mine - if I am looking at it correctly looks like 1?61? Maybe I am looking at the wrong thing... Thanks for any assistance :)

Well, 1461 would be too early and 1561 would be too late for Ferdinand and Isabella. I think it may have an overdate or something, and the date cannot be read correctly (at least from the pictures).

Thanks :) I'm thinking probably what I thought was a date is actually a word I can't make out right now. Looking at some other examples of the 4 maravedis I don't think they are dated (??) Still trying to figure this out...

Actually I think you are right, the Ferdinand and Isabella type with the cartouche around the lion and castle are usually not dated. Sometimes they were revalued and stamped with a date of the revaluation, but the few I found online are described as a date range of their rule.

Pretty sure you have correctly identified the coin but I cannot find an example of one to confirm it for you. But the legends speak for themselves. And no, they were not dated.

In the future you may find this site to be of help - http://www.maravedis.net/ - scroll down to get the English version.

Thank you both. And thank you GD for the link :) I'm surprised there isn't more out there on the net about this coin. But I'll keep searching....
