Going to be adding some of my "better" coins to this thread over the coming weeks. If you have time, I would look to grade these coins. 1921 Morgan Dollar.
it never hurts to say please you know. as for grade im not too sure. there are a lot of marks (especially on the obverse) that i think might be on the holder rather then the coin but i just cant tell
It looks like it has been improperly cleaned. I see lots of hairlines and those gashes on Liberty's face may be interpreted as damage..............AU Details. Chris
Might be the pics it look to have been lightly polished to me. That would get it the harshly cleaned designation and no grade.
3 coins, so I will number them. I will number all for future reference, and to make it easier. Lets start out with the nicest piece. 1834 Dime. This is my father's though. Found metal detecting. This is #1 It was very bright as most silver does coming out of the ground, but had developed tarnish as it sits in air. I'm guessing EF-40, let's hear yours. Also, would it be worth having it slabbed by PCGS or ANACS? 1866 3 Cent Nickel. I'm guessing G-4. #2 1882 Morgan Dollar. I have no idea on this one. #3 It has NOT been cleaned.
I would have to say 1 was cleaned as well considering it was dug.. shame really as it looks like some great detail..........
The #1 coin was found with a detector, came out of the ground bright, as most silver coins do. The only cleaning done to it was with a soft brush under running water to knock dirt off. It has never been polished.
Perhaps but, that was probably all it took to give it a details grade as you can see the lines from cleaning it if I see what I think I see there...
1921 Morgan - improperly cleaned 1834 Capped bust dime - improperly cleaned 1866 3CN - improperly cleaned 1882 Morgan - AU53/55 Lance.
By improperly cleaned on the capped bust dime. Do you mean by the toning, or the marks on the surface?
The marks on the surface. And no it doesn't matter if those marks (the hairlines and fine scratches) are the result of the coin being in the ground or the result of someone harshly cleaning the coin.
The 1921 Morgan, 1834 capped bust dime and the 1866 3CN = details, improperly cleaned (it's fairly clear from the photos) and the 1882 is boarder line unc, could go AU58 or MS61, I wouldn't be surprised with either grade.
