I've searched through various ID websites and catalogs, with no luck. My biggest obstacle is not being able to identify the figure on the obverse, nor decipher the letters on the reverse, so I can't even narrow the scope of my search.

If anyone can help, it would be appreciated.

I think its supposed to be :
Paeonian Kingdom, Audoleon AR Didrachm. Head of Athena right in crested Corinthian helmet / ΑΥΔΩΛΕΟΝ—ΤΟΣ, horse trotting right, AY monogram under raised foreleg.

But I dont think its real, sorry. But see what others say, might be an ancient imitation though.

I agree with Randy on both points. The only thing I can add is that Audoelon is a very commonly found type in ancient Celtic imitations. However these are generally a much wilder style while this one just looks odd as opposed to Celtic. My guess is that the coin is modern but I have no previous experience with this exact type.

Interesting! Thanks for the help Randy and Doug. It does look very similar to what you described....I looked up photos on wildwinds.

Is it the fact that it's similar in theme, but different from what is shown on the website that makes you think it's a reproduction?

I've had this since I was young...I always wondered whether it was a reproduction or a legitimate item.

Any suggestions on further research I could do to determine this for sure?

Size and weight along with edge photos (and clearer image if possible) will help, and maybe try asking on forumancientcoins.com too
