I'm gonna start roll-searching here in a few weeks when I get the money. I'm starting my silver Roosie, Merc, and Washington Quarter collection. Would I be more likely to get silver dimes or quarters in a box? What are your experiences in roll-searching? Have you ever found a Merc? And how much do the boxes cost each?

Congratulations, roll searching is a fantastic hobby and a great way to find silver/copper. Dimes are an easier way to find some, quarters are really hit or miss. If you can order boxes of half dollars, that's better yet. Check out the roll searchers thread and see what treasures some of these guys pull, it will blow your mind! Best of luck to you.

I've had the best luck with half dollars (Ikes) and nickles. I never did find any silve dimes, and thats about all I was looking for in dimes. I did find a few 40% silver war-time nickles and a bunch of older nickles (pre-1958). I don't know why, but older nickles seem to be the most common out of all the change denominations. Actually, now that I think back, I did find one 1964 silver dime. Thats right, but only one. Pretty fun. The dimes (for my eyes anyways) are hard to look at and its best to find a way to look at the rims real quick. Thats how I found my silver dime. Luckily, I have one of those change counters that have little plastic coin containers so I would just dump the roll of dimes into it, look at the rims, and dump it back into the roll. The only problem with this which I thought about after is error coins...

I have had really good luck with dimes and have almost finished off a roll of silver dimes. And like was stated above, a hit and miss with quarters. either way, happy hunting.

I gave up a long time ago as it being hardly worth the time spent. Sorry it's not everyones cup of tea.

Roll searching can be fun, but I gave up on buying boxes of halves because it ultimately was costing me much more than the silver I found in the rolls to continue. Things like adding in the cost of gas to go get the coins, to return the coins, time involved, etc. I never found the "mother load" in one of those boxes, although some people have. So it's possible. But I think it's akin to winning the lottery. Some people do, but most lose their money on it.

But I still roll-search the lower denominations, as it's a great way to build a modern collection and sometimes find some neat errors, as well as training your eye to recognise an uncirculated coin from a circulated coin. And it's easier to get the lower denominations from just about any bank, so I don't have to spend extra money on gas to get me between banks. I can just combine with my normal shopping, errands, etc. for the most part.

But if you find it fun, why not?

Pennies. I can garuantee you'll find something worth keeping. Wheats, copper, errors, coins for your collection.

I agree with lindedad. Trying to build a set of Mercs, silver Rosies and silver Washingtons by roll searching would be a monumental task.
